Poet and Unitarian minister John Pierpont (1785-1866,), grandfather of John Pierpont Morgan, was the author of this epic poem. Pierpont's anti-slavery sentiments are clear in the poem, especially in the final stanzas. Unfortunately, his prejudices regarding Native Americans are also revealed. Wrappers are moderately soiled and show minor shelf wear.
