Four essays focus on the powerful writings of four influential figures: the Austrian author and teacher Adalbert Stifter (1805--1868) whose fame rests chiefly on his sketches of rural life; Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874--1929), the Austrian poet, dramatist and essayist remembered primarily for his collaboration with the German composer Richard Strauss; the gifted but disturbed writer Robert Walser (1878-1956) who led a wandering, precarious existence while producing poems, essays, stories, and novels; and Goethe, who needs no introduction.
