First edition, limited to 295 numbered sets of four volumes (Schmidt-Künsemüller no. 5352). Original paper wrappers bound-in. Minor fading / rubbing to the spines, else a near fine set. Interior is clean and bright.
There are 283 tinted heliograph plates of fine bookbindings, ten engraved portraits of Marius Michel, Cuzin, Ruban, et.al., and fifteen facsimiles of documents. A splendid catalog of one of the most famous libraries of French bookbindings. The catalogue is an excellent and rich source for the study of bookbindings in the nineteenth century, and is written in a lively and anecdotal style. The project is dedicated to Jean Grolier, "who only collected the bookbindings of his time, made for him, under his council and his mark, will rest eternally as the model of the "modern" amateur bookbinder.
