Mawdesley worked at Whittington on and off for a year, mending the walls, building a Cotswold stone extension to the Press building and scything the grass. The story is about the scythe, a tool of his ancestors and the portraits in the book are recognisably him. It is illustrated with six wood engravings by Miriam Macgregor (b.1935).
