A bibliography (Besterman 3012) published and bound by a Parisian fine binder and gilder of the early to mid-20th century. The first three volumes list about 10,000 (French) "livres de luxe," 1900 to 1928, generally by author and giving illustrator, printer, and binder as appropriate, along with edition information and, often, a description of the binding. The fourth volume lists the above books by "artistes illustrateurs" (not necessarily contemporary, for ex. Boticelli, Ingres, etc.), followed by a supplemental bibliography of about 250 "livres de luxe."
René Kieffer (1875-1963) was active as a book-gilder, fine binder and, later, a publisher for about sixty years, until his retirement in 1958. During his later years he was assisted by his son, Michel, who took over the business in 1958.
