Order Nr. 39953

Reprint of the 1835-1846 first editions which were very limited. According to Harrisse, Rich was the first bookseller to persuade American collectors of the importance of forming libraries specifically devoted to Americana. As a result, his clients were able to collect some of the earliest books relating to America, books which by mid-century were impossible to locate. John Carter Brown, Samuel Barlow, Peter Force, Henry C. Murphy, and James Lenox were some of the collectors who relied upon and benefitted from Rich's pioneering instincts in the field of Americana. This reprint edition contains two supplements. Spine of volume one age darkened. Else fine condition. From the private reference library of Dorothy Sloan with a commemorative bookplate loosely inserted.
