A fine copy. In his foreword to this massive study, the editor states that he undertook this project because he was previously not able to find a comprehensive German account of the book arts, and that he was satisfied that this present volume was the richest such work yet compiled in Germany. Through extensive commentary focusing on Italy, France and Germany, in Volume I he discusses the book arts as they evolved in the early Renaissance, while in Volume II he takes up the High and Late Renaissance. Indices in both volumes supply a detailed description for the black and white plates that follow. Both the artist and printer of the various borders, initials, vignettes, title pages, etc. are noted, where possible. Samples are displayed from the works of artists such as Geofroy Tory, Virgil Solis, Jost Amman and Johann von Essen. Some of the printers represented are: Simon de Colines; Sigm.
