For the project "Directory of 16th Century Prints Published in the German-Speaking Area" a workplace was founded in 1969 with the help of the German Research Foundation in the Bavarian State Library in Munich and in the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel. The task was to re-describe the prints of the 16th century, which until then had only been insufficiently recorded in the bibliography. In contrast to the bibliographic activities of neighboring countries, only those published in the contiguous German-speaking area (Germany, Alsace, Austria, German-speaking parts of Switzerland) were edited, regardless of the language of the text.
The directory is divided into three sections: I. Authors, Corporations, Anonymous; II. Editors, commentators, translators, literary contributors; III. Printing locations, printers, publishers.
