The original edition was printed in an edition limited to 400 numbered copies. Issued in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Giambattista Bodoni. Martino Mardersteig emulated the scrupulous attention to detail shown by his father in a similar project, the production of the Bodoni Manuale Tipografico, in 1968 (Officina Bodoni, no. 156). The original copy presented to the imperial couple was photographed for this edition, and all details of its production were reproduced. Just as his father had done, Martino enlarged the pages of the original, retouched them letter by letter, and then reduced them back to original size. From these, relief engravings were made. The borders for the poems and the engravings were reproduced by offset. The blind impressions left from the original printing of the engravings were also reproduced in the facsimile. Eight to ten colors were used to reproduce each of the 41 colored miniatures. Special paper was made to order to match the original. A splendid production.
