Order Nr. 139909

First edition. Rubbing to edges, spines and hinges of both volumes. Gilt on spine of both volumes mostly rubbed away. Exlibrary bookplates of the Forbes Library, Northampton, MA. The second volume has the exlibrary stamp on the title page. Private 19th-century bookplate on first blank. Very minor foxing to preliminary pages, else a very good set. Pierre and Firmin Didot were the sons of Francois Didot (1730-1804), who Updike calls "the first of the family to give to types `the Didot touch'." Pierre took over the printing business from his father while Firmin succeeded to the type-foundry. Updike states that Pierre "was at the forefront of the neo-classical movement in printing." This book is a beautifully printed example of their colloboration.
