Karl Shapiro has been the recipient of every major poetry prize, including the Pulitzer, Bollingen, and Shelley Memorial Award. Shapiro had also served as Poetry Consultant and Whittall lecturer to the Library of Congress and as Poet-in-Residence at Bucknell University. Shapiro's poetry is often associated with themes of American urban realism and with World War II poetry from a soldier's point of view. His realism rendered in colloquial idiom, has had a marked influence on the next generation of poets.
