Reprint of the first edition, which was produced over the period 1890-1916 (Besterman 3261). Exlibrary with markings, else a near fine set.
This massive bibliography is without a doubt the most comprehensive bibliography of the Jesuit order. It is absolutely indispensable for antiquarian booksellers and librarians seeking precise identification of many thousands of published works and their authors. It is also important for researchers in religious, intellectual, Jesuit, American and Asian history. It is an extremely valuable research tool on the history of the natural and social sciences. Because of its extraordinary scope, the work is fundamental to any collection of bibliography. Besterman cites the work as having citations for 150,000 printed items. The first edition, from which this is a reprint, appears to have been limited to a small print run. It also suffered from being printed on paper of high acid content, causing it to become increasingly brittle with age. The 1960 edition, which contains the same text with notes in the margins, was not reprinted; nor were the supplementary volumes, which followed after 1916. From the reference library of Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts with their bookplate included.
