The Smithsonian Libraries are situated in the middle of the world's largest museum complex. These libraries form a vital part of the research, exhibition, and educational enterprise of the Institution and of the world. The Smithsonian Libraries bring together 22 libraries with an online catalog of combined collections, and they exchanges publications with more than 4,000 institutions worldwide. As treatment processes have become more advanced, the Library has worked to save 1.5 million printed books and manuscripts.

This exhibition is the first Smithsonian Library exhibition held outside of Washington D.C. Held in New York at the Grolier Club, the Library and the Club came together to share a mutual heritage with each location's residents and visitors. This catalogue presents books, bound in vellum and plastic, on all subjects including insects, flowers, steam engines, hot-air balloons, African art, the universe, uncharted continents, and the journeys of Buck Rogers in the 25th century. The catalogue is illustrated in black-and-white and contains chapters on journeys over land and sea, journeys of the mind, and journeys of the imagination. It also provides a brief description of the Grolier Club and the Smithsonian Institution.
