PREFACE

Book Typography is a practical guide to the principles and processes of designing and typesetting books. Many of these have changed radically in recent years as digital technology advanced. The publishing industry has also undergone changes in the way it employs and organizes its workforce. Many tasks previously carried out in-house, such as copy-editing and design, are now sent to outside suppliers and freelancers.

In writing this book, we aim to provide a useful resource to all those involved in the production of books, and to equip those new to the industry with the terms of the trade.

The examples we have used in this book are drawn from the work of Libanus Press over the past twenty years. Observant readers may note a bias towards the fields of literature, the arts and the humanities. Though this may result in a particular style of work being shown, the underlying principles and rules of typography can be applied across a wide variety of styles and subject matter.

We hope that those working in highly specialized fields, such as mathematics or linguistics, will appreciate that there is not room in this edition to do justice to the complex details of their subjects. We do look forward, however, to receiving suggestions from other practitioners whose areas of expertise and methods may be different to our own.
