Order Nr. 99875

An introductory book to the sources for the history of science covering over two and a half centuries. Focusing on the physical sciences in Great Britain, the author surveys the material available, offering assessments of its uses and warning of its possible misuses. Technical and non-technical written sources, laboratory equipment, industrial apparatus, scale-models, and other evidence that has survived from the period between the rise of scientific societies in the seventeenth century to the beginning of WWI are examined. Mr. Knight argues that the sources for the history of science are as valuable as those for other branches of history in shedding light on the social, economic, and political history of a period or a nation. The imprint on the spine is upside-down, light rubbing on head and tail of spine, some damage to bottom and top edges, and dust jacket lightly soiled. With the pencil signature of Gavin Bridson, and his notation that the markings in the text are from the previous owner.
