This is a recollection of Dunning's friendship with Michael Shaara ( The Killer Angels) over one summer and, simultaneously, a meditation on writing and what it is to be a writer. Dunning, owner of the Old Algonquin Bookstore in Denver for many years, is perhaps best known for his mysteries involving former policeman turned book dealer, Cliff Janeway.
