Order Nr. 78385

Facsimile reprint of the original 1909 edition published in New York by Dodd, Mead and Company (See Besterman 918). "The collection here described consists for the most part of works of English Literature, covering the period from Caxton to the latter part of the nineteenth century. Among so many works of the utmost rarity as are here described it is difficult to select any for special mention without an appearance of undue discrimination, yet the impulse cannot be resisted to call attention to a few which will be sure to commend themselves in no slight degree to the collector. Of these the earliest, in point of time, are single specimens from the printing presses of William Caxton, Richard Pynson, Julian Notary, Wynkyn de Worde, and William Copeland... The collection of Shakespeare's works is doubtless the finest in this country, and, so far as we are at present informed, is surpassed by only four others in England, but one of which is in private hands." -- From the Preface.
As with all the bibliographies compiled by George Watson Cole, the descriptions are extensive and meticulous. Full collation for each work is provided, as are notes regarding plates, illustrations, size and binding. In all, 750 important works are described.
