Prefaced with a letter to the legendary book collector William K. Bixby (1857-1931) from the previous owner of the manuscript,, the original model of Penn-Yan Bill, who mentions that Field wrote the poem in a room at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Chicago, while waiting for him to finish writing a letter.
