Limited to 1950 copies signed by Bruce Rogers. Overall design of this classic in book design and illustration was in the hands of Bruce Rogers. Each of the 37 volumes of Plays is illustrated by a different illustrator. The impressive list includes Eric Gill, Arthur Rackham, Gordon Ross, Edy Legrand, John Austen, Robert Gibbings, Fritz Kredel, Barnett Freedman, Edward Bawden, Gordon Craig, Frank Brangwyn, Valenti Angelo, Edward Wilson and Agnes Miller Parker. The text for this edition was edited by Herbert Farjeon who went back to the original appearances of the First Folio and Quarto Editions for punctuation and capitalization yet did correct obvious errors. All spines are spotted. Accompanying this set is SHAKESPEARE, A REVIEW AND A PREVIEW. With TEN YEARS AND WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (original cloth). A better-than-fair set. With a T.L.s. from George Macy loosely inserted.
All volumes showing spotting and occasional moisture damage, the moisture damage effecting mostly the spines of the volumes with staining. The Alls Well That Ends Well volume shows significant water damage, with spotting on the front cover and discoloration on the rear cover, as well as some wrinkled interior pages. This is the only volume where interior pages are wrinkled. The Ten Years and William Shakespeare volume has significant spotting on the cover, and the occasional corner of only a few volumes has discoloration due to moisture damage.
