First edition, one of 150 numbered copies printed on Japanese Vellum of which this is one of 75 for America. S-K 1543. Part of Gleeson White's "Ex-Libris" Series. (Mejer no.127; Brenni no.337 for U.S. edition of 1895). Spine age-darkened, minor staining to spine. Minor shelfwear. Only the slightest bit of toning to the edges of the textblock, else a near-fine copy.

With 53 plates and many other illustrations in the text. Matthews was a prolithic author, mostly under the pseudonym of Arthur Penn. In this book he gives a description of the bindings by Grolier, DeThou, LeGascon, Padeloup and Derome then tells of binding techniques as practiced in the 1890s including commerical bindings and binding in paper covers. The last chapter contains a history of the Grolier Club. He includes short descriptions of the influence of posters on the design of bookcovers and paper wrappers.
