Order Nr. 58869

Printed in an edition limited to 500 copies. A fine copy. A catalogue about the beautiful and innovative bindings of books exhibited at the Grolier Club of 254 publisher's bookbindings, each described in detail and all illustrated in color. They represent the period from the end of the Napoleonic Wars to the onset of the First World War. 'Publisher's bookbinding' refers to a binding designed and produced in multiple numbers, as opposed to a single hand-bound book. The first part of the book presents a chronology of design trends during the course of the century, and the second presents variant bindings. The final section shows examples of a wide array of designs, materials, and production methods, from various dates and countries. It includes a foreword by Ruari McLean and is illustrated with 257 color plates.
