This work is designed to remedy in part this situation by publishing a list of the map collections in the Netherlands; by formulating a schematic outline of the bibliography of atlases published in the Low Countries before 1800; and by studying the character of map collecting throughout the centuries in general and by describing the history of Dutch map collections in particular.
