A near fine copy. First printings by American authors of "novels, novelettes, romances, short stories, tall tales, tract-like tales, allegories and fictitious biographies and travels, in prose," published 1901-1925. Subsequent printings/editions are noted only when there was a substantial change. Excludes children's and juvenile literature, "collections of anecdotes, essays, and periodicals" and "series fiction." Includes 1st book editions of items which also appeared in periodicals, and may cross-reference pseudonyms, joint authors, and works published as parts of other works. Entries for short story collections often list contents. Not exhaustive coverage, but at 13,179 entries (exclusive of cross-references), quite extensive. Most copies examined for the bibliography are from the William Charvat Collection of American Fiction at the Ohio St. Univ. Libraries except where another source is explicitly indicated. Entries for unexamined copies indicate source of description. Entries include date of Library of Congress copyright entry, date of announcement in Publishers' Weekly, and British Library data as available. Title, illustrator, publisher and pseudonym indexes. Rubbed along edges. From the reference library of Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts with their bookplate included.
