Order Nr. 50103

Auction catalogue for sale of 400 lots from the Ballard collection on January 21/22, 1942, by order of the executors of his estate. The Philadelphia lawyer Ellis A. Ballard (1861-1938), an acquaintance of A. Edward Newton, collected from all stages of Rudyard Kipling's career. Some lesser writings of Kipling actually appeared in book form for the first time in Ballard's 1936 private publication. With 400 items, this catalogue constitutes a kind of Kipling bibliography. Ballard also published his own catalogue of the collection in 1935. One of the purchasers at the sale was the Morgan Library. See Dickinson: Dict. of Am. Book Collectors, pp.26-27. Many entries have annotations, some with illustrations. Spot on front cover.
