Reprint of the 1928 edition. The author traces the progress of the early art schools and societies of artists that arose from them, and discusses the establishment of Kneller's Academy, from which arose the movement that led to the foundation of the Royal Academy and the moderm system of art exhibitions. He presents biographical information and anecdotes about all the well-known artists of the eighteenth century, as well as others who influenced the artistic life of that era. Illustrated with reproductions and facsimiles; well indexed, with many appendices. Tables of contents include chapter summaries. In all, an excellent summary of this important century in English art history. Fine condition. From the private reference library of Dorothy Sloan with a commemorative bookplate loosely inserted.
