Together with an essay by George Painter: An introduction on the Dream, the Dreamer, the Artist and the Printer. One of the most celebrated incunables, Colonnas Hypnertomachia Poliphili was printed in Venice by Aldus Manutius in his recut Bembo type with 172 remarkable woodcuts throughout the work. George Painter was the Assistant Keeper in charge of Incunabula at the British Museum and inserted in the book is a tls from him about the possible identity of the artist behind the remarkable woodcuts in the Hypnerotomachia.
