Order Nr. 136897

First edition limited to 440 numbered copies. Extra spine label tipped-in at rear. Spine separating from the binding along rear hinge. Minor wear to spine ends, with minor loss to the head of spine. Bookplate of noted collector Brian Stilwell on front free endpaper. A collection of 75 of Wordsworth's finest sonnets. Woodcut vignette to title page. Designed by Bruce Rogers and printed at the Riverside Press for Houghton Mifflin Company. From the Thomas M. Whitehead Collection of Books About Books.

The typography is by the notable American book designer Bruce Rogers (1870-1957), who "was appreciated in his lifetime. In addition to several honorary degrees, in 1948 he was awarded a gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for distinction in the graphic arts. Over decades of accomplishment in which he designed approximately 500 books... Rogers literally defined the profession of book designing in the United States" (ANB).
