"This essay has been written at the request of the director of the School of Fine Arts, Román S. de Lascurain, and on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the discovery of America." (pp. 3).

The author was born in Mexico City on January 7, 1864 and died on July 16, 1924. He was a friend of Manuel Payno, Guillermo Prieto, José María Roa Bárcena and Casimiro del Collado. In 1887, he obtained his law degree with the thesis 'On the Division of Public Power', however he did not practice his profession. He dedicated himself to teaching, letters and the study of art. From 1892 to 1902, he taught art history classes at the Academia de San Carlos, and in 1903, he was appointed secretary of the institution. In 1905, he began to teach the Spanish language at the National Preparatory School. A few years before the beginning of the Mexican Revolution, he was consul of Mexico in Central America, South America and Europe. He was elected a corresponding member of the Mexican Academy of the Language on February 11, 1902, years later he was appointed a number member, he took possession of the IX chair in 1910. He was acting secretary in 1910 and acting director in 1915. In 1917, He was elected 2nd censor of the institution, a position he held until his death.
