First edition. In the 1920's, the Pegasus Press (or "À l'enseigne du Pégase") of John Holroyd-Reece, based in Paris, published a number of art books, including a Pantheon series. Harcourt, Brace and Company became the American distributors for Pegasus in the late 1920s, hence this American edition. Officina Bodoni designed the nearly identical companion set on German Illumination by Goldschmidt which was also published in 1928.
Volume I contains a survey of English illumination from its inception to its decline in the 14th and 15th centuries, with a bibliography and index. The first 50 leaves of plates follow, each preceded by a tissue sheet identifying the illustration or illustrations on the plate. The second volume contains an additional 79 leaves of plates, in the same format. Illustrations are monochromatic collotype printed on heavy stock attached to stubs by cloth tape.
