Published to accompany the exhibition "A True Friend of the Cause" : Lafayette and the Antislavery Movement, December 7, 2016-February 4, 2017. Preface by Olga Anna Duhl, essays by Diane Windham Shaw, Laura Auricchio, Patrick Villiers and John Stauffer, followed by an illustrated checklist of items in the exhibition. Hailed as the "Hero of Two Worlds," the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) has received renewed attention for his multifaceted contributions in several areas, including international politics, diplomacy, the military, and the human rights movement. His sustained efforts deployed on both sides of the Atlantic on behalf of the abolition of slavery however are not widely known. This is the first public exhibition devoted to Lafayette's role as an international anti-slavery advocate.
