DNB XIX, 939-40. Thomas Tomkins (1743-1816), noted for his "boldness of design, inexhaustible variety, and elegant freedom," operated a writing school on Foster Lane, Cheapside, London. According to DNB, the edition of 1777 is the first of four calligraphic works published by Tomkins. Lacking 10 out of 40 plates for a total of 30 plates (I-XXX). Rubbed at spine, with occasional loss of leather. Bumped at corners with some loss of leather. Shelfwear to extremities.
