Order Nr. 118515

A selection of proof engravings. Bookplate of Mr. Chas. T. Tallent Bateman on front pastedown. Written inscription on that bookplate notes that this volume includes 140 steel plate impressions. An apparently later notation notes that this volume is "unique," with "no copy in the British Museum." Consecutive dated engravings range from 1827 to 1835, showing title pages and illustrations of The Keepsake, (1828-1835) an illustrated anthology of poetry and prose published from 1828 to 1857, geared toward middle-class women and offered for sale at Christmas time (University of Maryland "Romantic Circles" website and Faxon, Literary Annuals and Gift Books 1823-1903, 100-1). It is thus possible the engravings in this collection were designed for that annual periodical. Many of them have Romantic-era themes. Spine not present. Front board detached from text; rear board nearly so. Boards scuffed and rubbed. Considerable foxing throughout text, but it generally does not obscure the engravings.
