This is an edited reprint of three articles which appeared in The Book Collector, Vol. 50 nos 3,4 and 5 (Autumn and Winter 2001 and Spring 2002). It had to be brief, because of lack not only of space but also of documentation. Apart from an invaluable record of publications compiled by Ruth Hart-Davis and a few papers of my father's, there are no unpublished documents. Companies House could find no records, and HarperCollins, owners of the residue of the firm, while most willing to help, could find no minutes for the seventeen years of Sir Rupert's chairmanship. I have therefore had to rely on his letters to Lyttelton, his memoirs (written in extreme old age, and not always reliable), references in the Bookseller, and above all on the ageing memories of my colleagues in the firm, to whom I am extremely grateful.
