See More... Millington, Roy STEPHENSON BLAKE: THE LAST OF THE OLD ENGLISH TYPEFOUNDERS.
New Castle, DE Oak Knoll Press 2003 large 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. 246 pages.
First edition. This is the story of how Stephenson, Blake & Company became the most significant typefounder and printers' equipment supplier in Britain and the Commonwealth. The rise of Stephenson, Blake & Company spans five generations and many technological innovations. The first major threat to their type founding empire was Ottmar Merganthaler's on-site type maker, the Linotype, in the 1890's. The second was the advent of computerized typesetting in the mid-20th century, which became the deathblow to the industry. How the firm met these challenges is a fascinating read.
