D.B.U and R.R. prints for the first time extracts from the important correspondence between these major figures of American graphic arts, revealing a little-known closeness between the Merrymount Press fine printer Updike and the artist Ruzicka. `t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2008 9 x 12.5 inches cloth. 354 pages.
The seventeenth century is an underrepresented period in the publications on watermarks. A growing demand in the fields of history and art history for exact dating of documents and artworks on seventeenth century paper was one of the main reasons for the authors to conduct research in this area.
This book is based on the `Ingekomen Stukken` (`Received Pieces`) of the Staten van Zeeland (States of Zeeland), carefully collected per year and preserved in the Zeeland Archives in Middelburg. In order to reproduce the watermarks in actual size, as was the case in volume 1600-1650, `Soft X-ray` equipment developed by Dr. Jan van Aken (emeritus professor dental radiology of the University of Utrecht) was used.<BR>With 1221 black and white and 7 full colour true size photographs and detailed descriptions Watermarks 1650-1700 found in the Zeeland Archives gives together with the first volume (Watermarks 1600-1650 found in the Zeeland Archives) a long awaited overview of the watermarks and the types of paper that where available in The Netherlands in the 17th century.
An indispensable tool for all those who are interested in paper, economy, history and art-history. With 1228 illustrations of which 7 full color.

(Leadenhall Press) Young, Matthew McLennan FIELD & TUER, THE LEADENHALL PRESS: A CHECKLIST
With an Appreciation of Andrew White Tuer New Castle, Delaware and London Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2010 7 x 10 inches hardcover, dust jacket 176 pages
This book is the first comprehensive (and long-overdue) bibliographic study of the London partnership of Field & Tuer and their publishing imprint, Leadenhall Press (later the Leadenhall Press, Ltd.). Matthew Young makes a convincing argument for Andrew W. Tuer (1838-1900) as one of the most imaginative and influential printers and publishers of the mid-to-late Victorian period. Known today primarily for old-style facsimile reprints and a few outstanding works such as Tuer's own History of the Horn-Book, the Leadenhall Press in fact published hundreds of titles in almost every subject area, from sixpenny pamphlets to vellum-bound limited editions dedicated by command to the Queen, as well as two important and long-running periodicals: The Paper & Printing Trades Journal and The Printers International Specimen Exchange. The remarkable range of the catalogue is evident in a small sample from 1885: Jerome K. Jerome's first book, On the Stage--and Off; Joseph Crawhall's hand-colored Izaak Walton: His Wallet Booke; The Owls of Olynn Belfry, illustrated by Randolph Caldecott; Sir Montague Shearman's Foot-Ball: Its History for Five Centuries; feminist Emily Jane Pfeiffer's Flying Leaves from East and West; and Songs of the North, illustrated by (among others) Edward Burne-Jones, Charles Keene, Albert Moore, Frederick Sandys, and J.M. Whistler.

The book includes a revealing portrait of Andrew Tuer as a man of energy, curiosity, and wit: a successful businessman, inventor, advocate for fine printing, publisher, designer, collector, author, and correspondent. The annotated checklist describes nearly 450 publications issued by Field & Tuer and the Leadenhall Press from 1863 to 1913. Listing details include: month and year of publication, publisher's job number, listed price, brief description of format and cover design, important aspects of content and publication, and location of scarce and noteworthy copies. Appendices cover Andrew Tuer's writings, ephemera, series titles, and institutional collections of special interest. A color section and illustrations in the text complete the story of an important link in the development of printing between the Chiswick Press of Charles Whittingham II and the celebrated publishers of the 1890s.

Matthew Young is a graphic designer and book collector. He was the recipient of a 2008 Everett Helm Visiting Fellowship award to examine the collection at the Lilly Library (Indiana University), and he has presented papers on the Leadenhall Press at conferences in England, Canada, and the United States. A previous article, "The Mystery of Walt Ruding: A Solution," was published in the Antiquarian Book Monthly in 2001.

With introductory remarks by Vivien Noakes. Stroud Catalpa Press 1988 oblong 8vo. stiff paper wrappers. xii, 119 pages.
A fascinating census of the limericks in Edward Lear's Book of Nonsense, which was first published in 1846 as two separate volumes with seventy-three limericks. A "new" (i.e. second) edition came out in 1855, and a third edition with forty-three additional verses was published in 1861. This third edition provides the first full text and also identifies Lear as the author for the first time. It is often considered the first "trade" version, as it was published by Routledge, Warne & Routledge and consequently received broader distribution and readership. Justin Schiller has cross-referenced the 116 limericks in the third edition with eight manuscripts for this book (which are now preserved in various rare book collections) and compared them to the printed texts of the 1846, 1855 and 1861 editions. This volume also contains a census of known copies of the genuine first edition.

See More... Leroy, David H. MR. LINCOLN'S BOOK: PUBLISHING THE LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATES.
With a Census of Signed Copies New Castle, DE & Chicago, IL Oak Knoll Press & Abraham Lincoln Book Shop 2009 6 x 9 inches cloth, dust jacket 228 pages
Fifty years ago, David Mearns at the Library of Congress wrote a twenty-page overview of the basic process that led to the publication of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Here, for the first time in a detailed and readable account focusing on Lincoln's personal involvement, Dave Leroy writes the full story with original correspondence, contemporary newspaper accounts, and photos and illustrations of the day to carry the reader from the dejected debater of 1858 to the surprise president of 1860 who rode a political bestseller to the White House. In 1954, Illinois historian Harry Pratt located and described eighteen inscribed copies of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. In this new work, 42 signed volumes are identified.

Perhaps the last remaining Lincoln mystery is also explained at length: did Lincoln make one or two paste-up scrapbooks of the original newspaper texts of his and Douglas' verbatim debate remarks? If only one existed, why did a New York newspaper account hint at another in December, 1860? If there were two, what became of the second? Like a lawyer before a jury, Leroy marshals the facts to let the reader decide. Ultimately, Mr. Lincoln's Book asks the reader to resolve the century and a half old debate: was Lincoln an author? Some argue that he wasn't, but Leroy leads us to conclude that Lincoln, in more ways than not, was author of the book publishing the debates.

It is a rare day when something novel is published about Abraham Lincoln's life and work. Yet 20,000 volumes later, Mr. Lincoln's Book is an unknown study, well researched and compellingly told. The printed volume is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing a complete copy of Lincoln's scrapbook of the debates, copies and transcriptions of Lincoln's correspondence, and some related political cartoons and photographs.

A former prosecutor, attorney general, lieutenant governor, and United States Nuclear Waste Negotiator, Dave Leroy has written and spoken about Lincoln for thirty years. He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Law degree from Lincoln College and serves as chairman of the Governors Council of the United States Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. This is his first book-length text about Lincoln. Leroy lives with his wife Nancy in Boise, Idaho, and Bordeaux, France.

First edition. Gregorio Leti was a seventeenth-century European writer of great popularity. His books of biographies, general histories and writings on the papacy were widely read and translated into many languages. Born in Milan and educated in a Jesuit school, Leti resisted the attempts of his uncle, the Bishop of Acquapendente in Umbria, to interest him in pursuing a profession in the church and instead chose to travel and write. He lived in the court of King Louis XIV in France and later in the court of King Charles II, who commissioned him to write a history of England. Leti was elected to the Royal Society, but had to flee England because of changing political climates. He died in Amsterdam in 1701.

See More... Lewin, Jennifer (editor) NEVER AGAIN WOULD BIRDS' SONG BE THE SAME: ESSAYS ON EARLY MODERN AND MODERN POETRY IN HONOR OF JOHN HOLLANDER
(New Haven, CT) Yale University 2002 8vo. cloth, dust jacket 340 pages
This volume presents seventeen new essays that make significant contributions to the study of early modern and modern poetry today. They are written by both established and new scholars. Investigating the affective, formal, and historical dimensions of English and American poetry during the last four centuries, the authors are committed to reexamining the current demands of specialization in literary studies by implicitly expanding the definition of what it means to find literature a home in which contextual and aesthetic issues are mutually informing. Like the scholar-poet John Hollander, whose lasting influence this collection honors, the essays approach the meaning-making arguments that poetry figures forth from disparate angles that are almost always indebted to, but often quarrel with, recent developments in the field of literary study such as new historicism, genre studies, deconstruction, textual criticism, philosophy, and reception history.

Early modern poetry is the subject of the five essays in the first section, which advance compelling arguments about Spenser, Shakespeare, Elizabethan verse satire, religious lyric, and Milton. How poetry recognizes its own past and its limitations is a running theme in these pieces. The second part of the collection engages wider hermeneutic and pragmatic questions regarding the categories of thought that we bring to the appreciation of nineteenth- and twentieth-century poets such as Tennlyson, Elizabeth Bishop, and Wallace Stevens, and to the often contentious relationship between textual critics and "traditional" scholars, as well as between political philosophy and poetry In the third section, the poetry and essays of John Hollander and the manifold worlds created by his work are the subject of investigation that unites the entire collection as a whole. Implicitly they argue that Hollander's pedagogy and practice continue to offer a compelling model for an original, playful faith in the processes of thinking, reading, and reasoning that poetry offers its readers and practitioners.

Whatever their engagements with particular poets and methodologies, the authors' of the essays in this volume are united in their commitment to investigating the category of the literary through the multiple lenses of teachers, scholars, poets, and common readers. The worlds created by the poetic investigations in this volume are daringly new in that they renew our understanding of the category of the aesthetic.
