Reprint of the second revised, corrected and expanded edition published in Paris in 1924 by Francisque Lefrançois, Libraire de la Sociéte des Bibliophiles françois (Besterman 912). Bibliophiles desiring to collect could, at one time, turn to such publications as this. Books sought ("recherchés") for collecting are divided into three lists: those sought "for the text," sought "for the illustrations," and those "interesting from the point of view of typography." An introduction, with reproductions of illustrations mostly from incunabula, precedes these lists. An alphabetical list of works cited follows the lists. New Castle DE Oak Knoll Press 2003 small 4to. cloth 152 pages
First trade edition. From the late nineteenth century, wood engraving became a medium for creative expression. One of the most prolific engravers was Gwen Raverat (1885-1957). She trained as a painter, and developed an impressionistic approach - her skill at conveying atmosphere and different qualities of light was unrivaled. She also had a strong sense of character, as is shown by her numerous illustrations to children's books. This book contains the first in-depth assessment of Gwen Raverat as a wood engraver, exploring her technique and her experiments with color prints. In addition it contains a full catalogue of all her engravings, and a descriptive bibliography of the books and ephemera which she illustrated. 1 color and 87 black-and-white illustrations. SALES RIGHTS: Available in North & South America from Oak Knoll Books. Available outside North & South America from The British Library.

See More... Ray, Gordon N THE ART DECO BOOK IN FRANCE.
Edited by Tanselle, G. Thomas. Printed by Heritage Letterpress of Charlotte, North Carolina. Charlottesville, VA Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia 2005 6" x 9" cloth 159 pages
When Gordon Ray delivered the Lyell Lectures at Oxford in 1985, he chose as his subject the Art Deco book illustrations and bindings produced in France in the 1920s. This topic was not a surprising choice, for he had previously written magisterial annotated catalogues, largely based on his own collection, of British illustrated books from 1790 to 1914 and of French illustrated books from 1700 to 1914. His Lyell Lectures formed a natural continuation of the latter and gave him the opportunity to express his views on still another area in which, through his collecting and research, he had become expert. He accompanied his lectures with 183 slides, the majority of them in color, and those illustrations are in fact the reason that the lectures have not been published until now: the expense of producing so many illustrations was too daunting for the publishers that Ray approached.
Today a happy solution to this problem is available in the form of digital presentation on the internet, and Ray's work is now being offered in a combination of printed and electronic forms. The verbal text of his lectures is letterpress printed in this present volume (supplemented by eight plates, showing striking examples of the work of the major figures discussed), and all of the available illustrations are being published on the website of the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia.

See More... (Reed, Ethel) Peterson, William S. THE BEAUTIFUL POSTER LADY: A LIFE OF ETHEL REED.
New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2013 6 x 9 inches hardcover, dust jacket 160 pages
Ethel Reed (1874-1912) is one of the most elusive figures in the history of American graphic design. Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, she moved in the 1890s to Boston, where, while still in her early twenties, she achieved international recognition for her posters - and for her personal glamour. "The beautiful poster lady" is how newspapers of the day described her, and they often went on to claim that she was the most famous woman artist in America. Ethel Reed was an extraordinarily vivid personality of the fin de siècle and a striking early example of a media celebrity.

But in 1896, following a broken engagement, she sailed to Europe, contributed to the two final issues of the Yellow Book in London, and then, after the turn of the century, vanished in the fog (to use her own phrase). Now William S. Peterson, through meticulous archival research, has at last been able to reconstruct the story of her life in England. Though unsuccessful in renewing her artistic career, she found lovers there, bore two children, and eventually married Arthur Warwick, an English army officer. Yet the marriage fell apart immediately, and her final years were darkened by poverty, drug addiction, and alcoholism.

This is the only book-length treatment of her work as a designer - and the first successful attempt to recover Ethel Reed's enigmatic, hidden life. It includes 16 color plates of her posters and 47 black-and-white illustrations.

William S. Peterson (Professor Emeritus of English, University of Maryland), a bibliographer and book historian, has edited three scholarly journals and has written or edited sixteen books, the most recent of which is (in collaboration with Sylvia Holton Peterson) The Kelmscott Chaucer: A Census (Oak Knoll Press, 2011). One of his books was nominated for a National Book Award, and another was the winner of the 1993 Felice Feliciano Award. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and a Visiting Fellow at Exeter College, Oxford.

See More... Reese, William S. NINETEENTH CENTURY AMERICAN COLOR PLATE BOOKS
New York The Grolier Club 1999 8.5 x 11 inches hardcover, dust jacket 120 pages
Published in two parts in 1799 and 1800, The City of Philadelphia ...As it Appeared in the Year 1800 by William Birch was the first American color plate book to be published. During the mid 1890s, there was widespread use of the trichromatic half-tone process. This was quickly replaced with new mediums that dominated the twentieth century, providing the basis for this publication. Because production moved from hand-colored plate engravings and lithographs to the development of chromolithography, the nineteenth century shows the birth, rise, and eventual demise of methods of production in the culture of American printed books.

Color in books represented luxury during the nineteenth century. Color was never cheap, and although technology made color plates available to a wider audience, the big color plate books were still only available to the rich because of their high cost. As the demand for color became stronger, publishers were more eager to supply it. To do this, it often meant hand finishing was replaced by mechanical work, and quality was therefore reduced.

This exhibition takes a closer look at the world of lost processes and skills. This book traces the progression of production processes and the careers of some of the leading specialists. Aiming to show the diversity of color plate work among the leading titles, the exhibition displays highlights of the century and provides insight into the tastes and interests of those producing in the nineteenth century. Beautifully illustrated, Stamped with a National Character: Nineteenth Century American Color Plate Books shows the production techniques used in creating color plate books in America.

Baltimore The Johns Hopkins University Press 1993 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. xiii, 188 pages, with one additional leaf.
First edition. "Although the thesis and examples in this volume were first tested in May 1989 by the reactions of the bibliographical specialists from Oxford and London who regularly attend the James P.R. Lyell Lectures in Bibliography, they are as much concerned with English poetry, the theory and practice of editing literary texts, and the theory of literary criticism as they are with the history of production, classification, and bibliographical description of modern manuscripts as artifacts." The nature and function of three classes of manuscript--the "private" or personal, the "confidential" or corporate, and the "public" are discussed in detail. Includes a discussion on Paul de Man's reading of Shelley's "The Triumph of Life," and much more.

See More... Rendle, Ellen NEW CASTLE COUNTY
Charleston Arcadia Publishing 2010 8vo paper wrappers 127 pages
Of Delaware's three counties, New Castle County is the smallest in area, even though two-thirds of Delaware's residents call it home. Aldous Huxley once mused that "the charm of history and its enigmatic lesson consist in the fact that, from age to age, nothing changes and yet everything is completely different." Certainly this is true of New Castle County. Images of America: New Castle County begins in 1875, as steamboats plied the waters of the Christina and Delaware Rivers and farmers worked the county's fertile farmland. Over the next 100 years, the population skyrocketed 400 percent, and suburban shopping centers and housing developments covered what had been farmland. By 1975, New Castle County boasted corporate giants, the world's largest twin-span bridge, and the stories of individuals as varied as DuPont family members; Emily Bissell, who introduced the Christmas Seal; and thousands of blue-collar workers making automobiles. New Castle County's history is as rich and colorful as the changing of the seasons and the imaginations of those who have lived here.
