2 volumes. Berlin Triton 2000 4to. linen-covered boards, both volumes enclosed in a linen slipcase. 391,(3) pages; 20 inserts in portfolio.
Printed in an edition of 2000 copies. Volume I of a series of three installments, not yet completed. Praised as "a masterpiece of book production" and "a product of enthusiasts" by critic Wilfried F. Schoeller, the book traces the early 20th-century history of the Insel publishing house. Insel earned its renown by turning book production into an art form as it printed the works of classic authors and gave a new generation of writers, such as Rainer Maria Rilke, their start. The editor, Brinks, reveals Insel's high aesthetic standards through sumptuous illustrations of its work. In all, there are 240 illustrations, seven of which are foldouts, many polychrome with three and four colors, and many with stunning gold print. One splendid example of the high-quality illustrations is the foldout of a series of classics, The Thousand and One Nights and the Decameron, the bindings designed by Marcus Behmer. The colors are so rich and the detail so striking that the reader almost feels he can touch and leaf through the deckled pages of the books shown. Another example depicted is that of Henry van de Velde's designs for the covers of Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra, as well as sample pages from the edition, both finely detailed with gold print. Text edited by Brinks with seventeen essays contributed by him and twelve other specialists such as Juergen Suess, Marcus Haucke, and Suzanne Buchinger. Essays beautifully printed with wide margins and double-spaced on Gardapat paper in cursive Borgis White Antiqua. Outstanding documentation for the essays at the back of the book, as well as detailed indices for artwork and literary sources. Accompanying the book is a slim briefcase volume containing twelve facsimile resolution papers and eight folder reproductions in their original format. Distributed for Triton in North America by Oak Knoll Press. In German.

From the Sylvia Ioannou Collection Athens Sylvia Ioannou Foundation 2003 9.75 x 12.5 inches paperback 240 pages
This book contains five units comprising the whole of the Sylvia Ioannous collection of maps about her homeland, Cyprus. Each unit displays the development of cartography and the history of the island.
The first three units encompass Frankish and Venetian rule. Maps and rare loose sheets illustrate the Frankish walls of Nicosia, the philosophical concept of the world as depicted by the cosmographers, and pages of atlases that made their first appearance while Cyprus was enslaved by the Ottoman Empire. The fourth unit, containing nautical charts, also contains the jewel of the collection, the manuscript isolario of Antonio Millo. The whole set is completed by the fifth unit, combining the cartography of the Age of Enlightenment with the scientific compilation of nautical charts.

In the late 1970s, Sylvia Ioannou began her systematic collection of books concerning Cyprus. Today, her collection comprises unique manuscripts and rare books, covering the period from the late fifteenth to the late nineteenth century, and is one of the most complete of its kind.

New Castle, Delaware & Winchester, England Oak Knoll Press & St. Paul's Bibliographies 1998 small 8vo. Hardback printed covers. 230 pages.
First edition. Second volume of the series PRINT NETWORKS. More than a century has passed since W. H. Allnut's paper on provincial printing was presented at the meeting of the Library Association in 1878. This topic has now moved to the forefront of investigating the history of the book. The annual Seminar on the British Book Trade has been steadily developing the depth and breadth of its interests, encompassing the contemporary social, economic, educational, and cultural climates in which booksellers, printers, and their fellows operated.
Even today, few booksellers can support themselves solely by the sale of books. In the earlier days, this was even more true, and so they engaged in a wide range of trades, including selling stationery, printing, and the sale of nostrums. Newspapers were also important sources of income, since their distribution networks were essential to the proprietors' survival. For much of the population, street literature was particularly significant. Two aspects of these ephemera - their contribution to the "oral tradition," and their crude illustrations - are explored here. The last three papers deal with the fact that we have so much printed matter to study is partly due to predecessors who formed libraries for their own use or for a wider readership. All these themes and more are included and explored in this work.

See More... Jack Stillinger (editor) LETTERS FROM A WALKING TOUR
Edited by Jack Stillinger New York The Grolier Club 1995 6 x 9 inches hardcover, slipcase 79 pages
During the summer of 1818, John Keats and Charles Brown left Lancaster on a 2,000 mile walking tour of the English Lake District and Scotland. Most likely Brown's idea, he planned to document everything he saw on his trip. He wrote in a letter to a friend, "I have many reasons for going wonder-ways: to make my winter chair free from spleen; to enlarge my vision; to escape disquisitions on poetry and mindless criticism; to promote digestion and economise shoe leather."

This book contains a foreword by Jack Stillinger and twelve letters written during the walking tour. Keats provides striking passages on the mountains, waterfalls, and lakes he experienced on his journey, and he philosophizes on landscape scenery and the imagination. In addition to the twelve letters, a handful of articles Brown wrote after the journey are also included. Some letters are addressed to Tom; George and Georgina (Keat's brother and sister-in-law); his sister Fanny; and John Hamilton Reynolds and Benjamin Bailey (two close friends). Containing detailed nature descriptions, many of the striking passages discuss mountains, waterfalls, and the Lakes of Scotland. Keats also philosophizes on the intellectual tone of the landscape and the relation of scenery to the imagination. The book documents day-to-day experiences mixed with anecdotes, jokes, and puns

The texts of the letters have been modernized in punctuation, spelling, and other nonsubstantive features. Printed on handmade paper, this is the first book in a series to display the arts of fine bookmaking. It includes a portrait frontispiece, a facsimile letter, and a map, all tipped in. The book was designed by Jerry Kelly and printed by Daniel Kelleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress, with the tip-ins printed by the Stinehour Press. It accompanies the exhibition held from September 19 to November 22, 1995, and was a winner of the AIGA Fifty Books of the Year Award.

Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2008 9 x 12.5 inches boards, stamped in black & red with Bodoni ornament 48 pages
From April through September of 1818, Thomas Frognall Dibdin toured France and Germany visiting libraries, booksellers, collectors, bibliographers, printers, and publishers. What resulted from this trip was his report of 1821 entitled A Bibliographical, Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany.

This beautiful book gives an entertaining account of Dibdin's stay in Paris during his six-month bibliographical tour. Frans Janssen describes the bibliophile's visits to prominent representatives of the book world such as Renouard, Brunet, and Crapelet, their reactions to what Dibdin had to say, and Dibdin's responses. As well as the responses that Dibdin had to his critics. This title also includes a brief biography of Dibdin and five color illustrations in the text.

Written by an expert on book collecting, skillfully translated into English (Harry Lake), designed and typeset by a famous Dutch designer (Piet Gerards), and printed and bound by the finest Dutch craftsmen in their field, this little book is a true jewel.

Professor Emeritus Doctor Frans A. Janssen, born in 1939 in the Netherlands, has worked in the fields of textual criticism and librarianship, and was professor of Book and Library History at the University of Amsterdam from 1989 until his retirement in 2004. He published a series of books and articles on the history of printing techniques, typographical design, and book collecting. A selection of his articles appeared in 2004 in Technique and Design in the History of Printing, covering subjects as the printing press, the layout of books around 1500 and around 1800, English and French printers manuals, and neo-platonic and hermetic philosophy in book collecting.

Hartford, Connecticut Watkinson Library, Trinity College 2011 10 x 8 inches paperback pamphlet 24 pages
To honor a gift given to the Watkinson Library by M. William McGill, this catalogue is an illustrated checklist of the works of British architectural and topographical artist John Piper. In the late 1920s, Piper attended both the Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art, and by the 1930s he was working steadily as an artist hardly earning a living. While his mother wrote articles for The Architectural Review to publicize his work, Piper developed a friendship with poet John Betjeman. This friendship significantly helped both of their professional careers. Piper's reputation continued to develop, and he eventually moved away from abstract art to a more representational style. Through his work, Piper learned how colors and textures reacted with one another, a concept continually displayed throughout his art.

This catalogue contains works by Piper, works about Piper, exhibitions and catalogues, miscellaneous Piper-ana, and works illustrated by Piper. It also includes an opening essay on Piper by William McGill. With both black-and-white and color images and a letterpress-printed cover, John Piper in the Watkinson is beautifully produced in a striking and appealing format.
