See More... (Hemingway, Ernest) Grissom, C. Edgar ERNEST HEMINGWAY: A DESCRIPTIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY.
New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2011 8.5 x 11 inches hardcover, dust jacket, with DVD 644 pages, plus 112 on DVD
Edgar Grissom's Ernest Hemingway: A Descriptive Bibliography can succinctly be described as the culmination of all previous endeavors in Hemingway bibliography. Grissom corrects the work of previous bibliographers, adding numerous editions and printings to the periods they covered and addressing the years 1975-2009, which had previously been left untouched. This is the only bibliography of Hemingway to classify edition, printing, issue, and state, and provide a classical bibliographical description. It is the only text that provides and describes every printing of every edition, as well as a comprehensive list of the parent editions of the primary works. Additionally, the text supplies the locations of those copies described. Grissom questions and corrects established Hemingway misconceptions, with references to support all of his claims. All continental editions are recognized: Albatross Continental Library, Continental Book Company, Zephyr Books, and Tauchnitz volumes, and Grissom treats with equal bibliographical importance the foreign, American, and English printings, providing full bibliographical descriptions of each.

The book includes a number of useful appendices: Grissom has created sections with reviews and epigraphs containing material by Hemingway, interviews with Hemingway, as well as lists of plays, television productions, and films adapted from Hemingway's works. An informative introduction describes key terms and abbreviations used throughout.

The bibliography is generously illustrated with title pages and copyright pages throughout the text. Accompanying the printed volume is a DVD-ROM with more than 2,000 color illustrations, including more than 50 images of Hemingway's signature from 1908 to 1960. These include dust jackets, covers, and spines, allowing for accurate comparison and identification of nearly all of Hemingway's work. The DVD-ROM also includes more than 112 pages of additional text. Ernest Hemingway: A Descriptive Bibliography is sure to be the definitive resource for Hemingway collectors, scholars, and libraries for many years to come.

Dr. C. Edgar Grissom is a retired physician living with his wife and their five rescued cats on a lake in the piney woods of southern Mississippi. Maintaining a lifelong interest in Ernest Hemingway, Dr. Grissom has collected for over forty years and has devoted the last twelve years to researching and writing this bibliography. His primary interest remains the bibliographical scholarship of materials pertinent to the development of standard editions. He is presently engaged in collating editions of Hemingway's primary works from the period 1923-1952.

See More... Herrmann, Frank THE ENGLISH AS COLLECTORS
New Castle Oak Knoll Press 1999 tall 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. 509 pages.
Reprint of the original edition, with corrections and a lengthy new introduction. This book is a unique and important source of information for those interested in the history of famous collections. Not only is the importance of collecting a growing factor in the history of art and antiques, but the details of provenance of objects traded on the art and antiques market are vital. In effect, the author has gone to the most revealing sources to produce a history of collecting in England and a study of the gradual emergence of the museum as a national institution.
ENGLISH AS COLLECTORS also offers interesting and compelling insight into the private lives of great collectors whose acquisitions became the nucleus of the foremost museums of Great Britain. Through 96 rare illustrations and 75 collector profiles, Herrmann goes behind the scenes to capture the drive, enthusiasm, and eccentricities of these patrons of the arts. In addition, this revised and expanded edition contains a useful and detailed bibliography of collecting history.
Since its first publication, ENGLISH AS COLLECTORS has become a classic in its field, and the first edition is now highly sought after. No other publication with so much detail has appeared to rival Herrmann's pioneering work. This volume is kept as a ready reference by those entrusted with the care of major private and public collections as well as those who organize exhibitions. This new edition has been issued because of continuing demand, and the author has contributed a well-written new introduction, brilliantly summarizing the state of private and "official" collecting today.

Herrmann continues his story, describing his stormy career as a Sotheby's director and then becoming the founder of his own publishing company and antiquarian book auction house. See More... (Hesterberg Press) THOMAS BEWICK: THE BLOCKS REVISITED & REDISCOVERED
Evanston, IL Hesterberg Press 2008 large 8vo cloth (i), 69 pages, ii, (iii)
The Blocks Revisited & Rediscovered documents the fascinating story of Thomas Bewick's personal blocks and their historic journey to Chicago in 1942. Many of these blocks found new homes quickly in the Midwest and across America, while others became well-travelled, eventually making their way back to England. The whereabouts of these blocks and their movements over the years have raised questions and a desire to document them for their safe keeping. It is hoped this five-year investigation will begin to provide answers, as over 700 of the 1,350 blocks that came to Chicago are documented here in 35 collections.

The Blocks Revisited & Rediscovered measures 6.5 x 10 inches and contains eighty pages which include fourteen original blocks printed on dampened Rives Heavy-weight paper using a Washington Hand Press. The remaining thirty-five Bewick illustrations were printed using a Vandercook Press from metal engravings reproduced from the Memorial Edition. The text, set in a digital version of Bulmer, was also printed from metal engravings. Color photographs of Bewick's portrait and his toolbox are included as tip-ins, along with a photograph of a group of blocks at the Hesterberg Press.

A numbered edition of ninety copies was bound by Campbell-Logan Bindery, Minneapolis, in a dark green cloth with contrasting green end papers. The spine is gold stamped and the front cover features an inset of a vignette printed from one of Bewick's blocks at the press.

See More... Hewes, Lauren B. and Caroline F. Sloat PORTRAITS IN THE COLLECTION OF THE AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY.
Worcester, MA American Antiquarian Society 2004 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. 408 pages.
Portraits in the Collection of the American Antiquarian Society grew out of a project initiated by Georgia B. Barnhill, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of Graphic Arts at the American Antiquarian Society, to update the documentation of the Society's portrait collection reflecting its growth since 1946.
The collection is an eclectic one that represents many aspects of the history of the Society: the interests of benefactors who gave their collections to the Society and the impulse to commemorate the Society's leadership. A number of portraits came into the collection with or because of related manuscript or book collections or were commissioned by the Society, and, for these, there is extraordinary information about the circumstances of their production.
Art historian Linda J. Docherty addresses the eclectic nature of the collection in an introductory essay in which she notes that "subject matter always took precedence over artistic quality at the Society, which, eschewing aesthetic standards, formed a collection of visual range and great historical import." Hewes, in addition to drafting catalogue entries for each portrait, has written an essay providing an overview of the 164 painted portraits, miniatures, and busts that comprise the Society's portrait collection. She observes that, like other institutional collections, these portraits speak to the Society's mission by reminding its staff of the individuals and ideas that preceded them. But, because AAS is primarily a research library of American history and culture, many of the images are of individuals closely affiliated with the Society's book and manuscript holdings. The Society has not limited itself to the collection of only aesthetically perfect canvases by famed artists, although works by important painters such as Peter Pelham and Christian Gullager became part of the collection in the nineteenth century. The assembling of representative works of period artists has never been a collecting objective; indeed, the observation by a visitor to the Society in 1841 that 'some of them [are] curious specimens of the art of design' still pertains. With 203 black-and-white illustrations and a 24-page color insert. Distributed for the American Antiquarian Society.

First edition. This ninth volume of the Print Networks series contains twelve exciting chapters from scholars working on the connections between the parties involved in the production of print artifacts; from author to printer, publisher, bookseller and reader. Chronologically, the offerings range from the seventeenth to the twentieth century as they track the developing trade in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Publishers and readers who spent part of their lives in North America are also featured in several of the chapters. The main theme emerging from this volume is the significance of cheap print, including newspapers and journals. The social, cultural, political and economic significance of these artifacts is highlighted by an in-depth examination of the lives of those men and women who participated in the book trade. New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2006 8vo. hardcover, dust jacket 254 pages
The infinite variety of people and places touched by the British book trade is the focus of this eighth volume in the Print Networks series. These papers - by established book historians and younger scholars - reflect the complex networks that existed between book trade people in the British Isles and the wider colonial world, focusing on those involved in the creation of the book, from author to agent, publisher to printer, bookseller to reader. The broad chronology covered here allows scholars of book history to observe thematic developments. Topics range from Scotland's earliest printers to late twentieth-century global marketing strategies, also exploring books in and about central America, New Zealand, Australia, Elgin, Northampton, and East Kent, among other diverse locations. These essays demonstrate what the connections between book trade practitioners locally and internationally can tell us about the significance of print. They accomplish this by analyzing the lives of the men and women who created and lived in these fascinating 'worlds of print'. Co-published with The British Library. New Castle, Delaware and London Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2012 6 x 9 inches hardcover, dust jacket 400 pages
The essays in this collection trace texts from their creation and printing through to their publication, dissemination, and collection. In doing so, they show how production processes change texts and how collectors subsequently appropriate them for their own ends. By examining the diverse activities of those involved in both textual creation and collection over a long period, these essays highlight both continuities and changes in the book trade. Taken together, this collection offers considerable new insights into many facets of the book trade, ranging from creation to consumption. This newest addition to the Print Networks series includes nineteen essays from leading book history scholars, including Mariko Nagase, Daniel Cook, Stephen Brown, Brian Hillyard, Catherine Delafield, Rob Allen, Rachel Bower, Iain Beavan, and more. The "compositors" section covers everything from The Mayor of Quinborough, published in 1661, to My Name is Salma, published in 2007. Essays on "collectors" include Dr. James Fraser, Titus Wheatcroft, Sir Walter Scott, the USA Armed Services, and more. The book is illustrated throughout in black and white.

New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2009 6 x 9 inches hardcover, dust jacket 256 pages
This tenth volume of the Print Networks series contains eleven original contributions by scholars working on periodicals and newspapers in the British Isles, outside London. The essays focus on the period between 1740 and 1914, including some case studies of individual publishers and their experiences in the print market. This volume demonstrates the cultural and political significance of newspapers and periodicals and their producers. A key theme emerging from the essays is the range of relationships between producers and consumers of print who lived and worked in the provinces and their connections with London. Examination of the question of "provinciality" sheds considerable new light on the connections between book trade people in all parts of the British Isles.

Dr. John Hinks is an Honorary Fellow at the Centre for Urban History, University of Leicester, where he is researching networks and communities in the British book trade. At the University of Birmingham he is an Honorary Research Fellow in English and a Visiting Lecturer in History, where he teaches early modern cultural history.

Dr. Catherine Armstrong is lecturer in American History at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her research interests include the cultural connections between Britain and North America during the colonial period, especially the ways in which the American landscape is portrayed in print on both sides of the Atlantic.

He has published on censorship, paratexuality and the reception of early modern travel narratives in the eighteenth century.
