During the summer of 1818, John Keats and Charles Brown left Lancaster on a 2,000 mile walking tour of the English Lake District and Scotland. Most likely Brown's idea, he planned to document everything he saw on his trip. He wrote in a letter to a friend, "I have many reasons for going wonder-ways: to make my winter chair free from spleen; to enlarge my vision; to escape disquisitions on poetry and mindless criticism; to promote digestion and economise shoe leather."

This book contains a foreword by Jack Stillinger and twelve letters written during the walking tour. Keats provides striking passages on the mountains, waterfalls, and lakes he experienced on his journey, and he philosophizes on landscape scenery and the imagination. In addition to the twelve letters, a handful of articles Brown wrote after the journey are also included. Some letters are addressed to Tom; George and Georgina (Keat's brother and sister-in-law); his sister Fanny; and John Hamilton Reynolds and Benjamin Bailey (two close friends). Containing detailed nature descriptions, many of the striking passages discuss mountains, waterfalls, and the Lakes of Scotland. Keats also philosophizes on the intellectual tone of the landscape and the relation of scenery to the imagination. The book documents day-to-day experiences mixed with anecdotes, jokes, and puns

The texts of the letters have been modernized in punctuation, spelling, and other nonsubstantive features. Printed on handmade paper, this is the first book in a series to display the arts of fine bookmaking. It includes a portrait frontispiece, a facsimile letter, and a map, all tipped in. The book was designed by Jerry Kelly and printed by Daniel Kelleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress, with the tip-ins printed by the Stinehour Press. It accompanies the exhibition held from September 19 to November 22, 1995, and was a winner of the AIGA Fifty Books of the Year Award.

First edition, limited to 210 numbered copies. In studying great authors, one of the persisting lines of inquiry has involved questions of influence and association. What specific authors influenced our writer? What books has he read, quoted from, or owned? The obvious first way to answer these questions is to examine the author's own published writings. Other ways include examining the author's correspondence; letters of the author's friends and acquaintances; contemporary biographical accounts; locating the actual physical volumes owned by the author or presented to others, etc. An important part of this process is examining any available list of the books in the author's library. All too frequently - and this is true in the case of Samuel Johnson - the only list is the sale catalogue of his library prepared for the auction following his death. When William Morris founded the Kelmscott Press, his celebrated private press, in 1891, one of the books he intended to print was an edition of the writings of Geoffrey Chaucer. Because of its size and complexity, The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer did not emerge from the press until June 1896, shortly before Morris's death. Even at the time of publication, there was almost universal recognition that it was the most ambitious and remarkable book produced in the nineteenth century. Morris himself designed the type, initials, and borders. His old friend Sir Edward Burne-Jones created the eighty-seven wood-engraved illustrations, and the book was printed on a hand-press with ink, paper, and vellum made to Morris' exact specifications.

According to Sydney Cockerell, the second Secretary of the Kelmscott Press, Morris printed 425 copies of the Chaucer book on paper and thirteen on vellum. This Census locates and describes as many of those books (which are now scattered all over the world) as possible and reconstructs their complicated history of ownership, supplying a narrative of the fortunes of each known copy that came off the press in 1896. New information about unlocated copies, copies that have been sold by book dealers and auction houses, and the binders who have subsequently rebound many of the copies is also included. Three substantial appendices record the copies sold by Bernard Quaritch (the London bookseller most closely associated with the production of the Chaucer), the mailing list of the Kelmscott Press, and other unpublished contemporary documents.

William S. Peterson (Professor of English Emeritus, University of Maryland) has written extensively about the Kelmscott Press and other aspects of fine printing in Britain and America. He is currently the editor of Printing History, the journal of the American Printing History Association. Sylvia Holton Peterson (Professor of English Emerita, University of the District of Columbia) is a medievalist and the co-author (with Jackson Campbell Boswell) of Chaucer's Fame in England: STC Chauceriana, 1475-1540 (2004).

This new bibliography of Rudyard Kipling, the first English-language author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, is the first to appear in fifty years and the first to incorporate modern standards of collation, binding cloth description, publication dates and prices, and dust jacket description. It fully describes 480 first editions, authorized and unauthorized, appearing as books, pamphlets, leaflets, and broadsides from 1881 through 2008 in British India, England, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and Chile--a dozen of which titles were not noted by prior bibliographers. This work also includes 127 titles of books with contributions from Kipling, 17 titles containing prefaces, introductory letters and forewords by Kipling, and 123 titles first printing his private letters.

These primary entries, besides describing each edition by publication type, size, pagination formula, binding, binding texture, ISCC-NBS color system name, dust jacket, copyright data, and cross-references to prior bibliographies, also include information on institutional library locations, manuscripts, and significant first editions of the title in later publishers' series and in other countries. Also described are all important association and presentation copies of Kipling's earliest works, with full inscriptions and institutional collection locations. Other major sections describe collected and uniform sets, editions listed by prior bibliographers that are not first editions but are "collectible," and misattributions. Significant innovations in this bibliography include the first complete chronological list of all of Kipling's newspaper and periodical appearances, the first examination of all English and American auction sale catalogues with lots of his editions (significant copies are cross-referenced in the entry texts), and separate listings of unauthorized private editions and private editions as first editions, musical settings of the poems, plays based on Kipling's works, film treatments in motion pictures and for television, published drawings and caricatures, and Kipling's symbols: the swastika and the Ganesh. Further appendices include a chronology of the author's life and major works, and titles of biographical studies of Rudyard and his immediate family.

These contents are present in one substantial volume containing the primary entries, grayscale images of bindings and title pages, and indices. Beginning with educational and religious magazines, it follows the trail through the violent and sensational 'penny blood' which thrived between around 1830 and 1870, to early attempts to entertain as well as educate boys through monthly magazines, and the ground-breaking weekly story papers and 'penny dreadfuls' of Edwin J. Brett, beginning with Boys of England in 1866, and his rivalry with the Emmett brothers and other publishers.

It also looks at cheap periodical publishing for boys in America, before exploring the introduction of more 'respectable' periodicals such as the Boy's Own Paper and Chums, and the attempts of a young Alfred Harmsworth, later Lord Northcliffe and founder of the Amalgamated Press, to usurp the 'penny dreadful' by producing the 'ha'penny dreadfuller'.

Finally, it charts the progress of the story paper through the first half of the 20th century, before it gave way to comics, imported American magazines, and television. It concludes with a comprehensive checklist, giving publication details of over 600 periodicals.

Robert J. Kirkpatrick is the author of Bullies, Beaks and Flannelled Fools: An Annotated Bibliography of Boys School Fiction, 1742 - 2000 (privately published, 1990 and 2001) and The Encyclopaedia of Boys School Stories (Ashgate, 2000). He is a long-standing member of the Childrens Books History Society, and a regular contributor to the Societys newsletter as well as to newsletters from other literary societies. In an earlier life he spent many years working as a welfare benefits adviser for a London housing association, and was the author of several books and articles on housing benefit and other social security matters.

This volume offers a new edition of Andrea Krupp's groundbreaking article, which first appeared in the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, and includes an expanded Catalogue of Bookcloth Grains, with illustrations in a larger format and, for the first time, in color. This book is the first comprehensive (and long-overdue) bibliographic study of the London partnership of Field & Tuer and their publishing imprint, Leadenhall Press (later the Leadenhall Press, Ltd.). Matthew Young makes a convincing argument for Andrew W. Tuer (1838-1900) as one of the most imaginative and influential printers and publishers of the mid-to-late Victorian period. Known today primarily for old-style facsimile reprints and a few outstanding works such as Tuer's own History of the Horn-Book, the Leadenhall Press in fact published hundreds of titles in almost every subject area, from sixpenny pamphlets to vellum-bound limited editions dedicated by command to the Queen, as well as two important and long-running periodicals: The Paper & Printing Trades Journal and The Printers International Specimen Exchange. The remarkable range of the catalogue is evident in a small sample from 1885: Jerome K. Jerome's first book, On the Stage--and Off; Joseph Crawhall's hand-colored Izaak Walton: His Wallet Booke; The Owls of Olynn Belfry, illustrated by Randolph Caldecott; Sir Montague Shearman's Foot-Ball: Its History for Five Centuries; feminist Emily Jane Pfeiffer's Flying Leaves from East and West; and Songs of the North, illustrated by (among others) Edward Burne-Jones, Charles Keene, Albert Moore, Frederick Sandys, and J.M. Whistler.

The book includes a revealing portrait of Andrew Tuer as a man of energy, curiosity, and wit: a successful businessman, inventor, advocate for fine printing, publisher, designer, collector, author, and correspondent. The annotated checklist describes nearly 450 publications issued by Field & Tuer and the Leadenhall Press from 1863 to 1913. Listing details include: month and year of publication, publisher's job number, listed price, brief description of format and cover design, important aspects of content and publication, and location of scarce and noteworthy copies. Appendices cover Andrew Tuer's writings, ephemera, series titles, and institutional collections of special interest. A color section and illustrations in the text complete the story of an important link in the development of printing between the Chiswick Press of Charles Whittingham II and the celebrated publishers of the 1890s.

Matthew Young is a graphic designer and book collector. He was the recipient of a 2008 Everett Helm Visiting Fellowship award to examine the collection at the Lilly Library (Indiana University), and he has presented papers on the Leadenhall Press at conferences in England, Canada, and the United States. A previous article, "The Mystery of Walt Ruding: A Solution," was published in the Antiquarian Book Monthly in 2001.

A fascinating census of the limericks in Edward Lear's Book of Nonsense,which was first published in 1846 as two separate volumes with seventy-three limericks. A "new" (i.e. second) edition came out in 1855, and a third edition with forty-three additional verses was published in 1861. This third edition provides the first full text and also identifies Lear as the author for the first time. It is often considered the first "trade" version, as it was published by Routledge, Warne & Routledge and consequently received broader distribution and readership. Justin Schiller has cross-referenced the 116 limericks in the third edition with eight manuscripts for this book (which are now preserved in various rare book collections) and compared them to the printed texts of the 1846, 1855 and 1861 editions. This volume also contains a census of known copies of the genuine first edition.

In addition there is an author-index giving, wherever possible, the full names of the authors, with the dates of birth and death. The entries under subjects are arranged in chronological order.
