See More... (British Museum) INDEX TO THE ADDITIONAL MANUSCRIPTS, WITH THOSE OF THE EGERTON COLLECTION, PRESERVED IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM AND ACQUIRED IN THE YEARS 1783-1836.
London Printed by Order of the Trustees [of the Museum] 1849 large 4to. original grained cloth. (iv), 514 pages.
Between the publication of the 1782 Ayscough catalogue and the inception of the Index to the Additions in 1836, the British Museum acquired about 5,000 manuscripts or manuscript sets. The Index to the Additions was not retroactive, and manuscript acquisitions from 1783 through 1835 had, therefore, no coverage in any printed catalogue until this gap was closed in 1849 by this "Index." The first 2,000 or so of the approximately 5,000 entries (numbered 5018 to 10,018) were taken from manuscript catalogues at the Museum, and most of the remaining 3,000 (post-1828) were extracted from the annual printed lists of donations and bequests, or from those of additions, with a few additional items. This resulted in a certain lack of uniformity in description, but the Museum felt that the problem was not serious enough to justify postponement (for editing) of this much-needed publication. The covers show some discoloration, soiling and scratches, with wear at corners and crushing at the top front corner. In general well-preserved.

(British Museum) LIST OF THE BOOKS OF REFERENCE IN THE READING ROOM OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM.
London Trustees of the British Museum 1859 8vo. original cloth. xxxi, 413 pages and tipped-in foldout.
First edition. The 1857 opening of the British Museum's new building, with the domed reading room first sketched by A. Panizzi in 1852, was followed by the first edition of this work in 1859. The preface by John Winter Jones (1805-1881), then Panizzi's assistant and later Librarian after his retirement, discussed the history of public access to the British Museum and earlier reading rooms, concluding with a discussion of the new Reading Room. This preface is followed by a list of titles, arranged alphabetically in brief entries. This is followed by a subject index of the catalogues which were kept on the circular tables around the librarian's and clerks' desks in the middle of the Reading Room, and a subject index of the reference books. A square multi-colored foldout shows the plan of the Reading Room with subject locations; the facsimile reproduces Panizzi's initial sketch and notes for the Reading Room. Ex library copy with markings. Front cover, free endpaper, and directions for using the reading room loose.

2 volumes. (London) H.M.S.O., 1850 folio blue binders cloth, original paper wrappers bound-in; contemporary half calf with cloth-covered boards and original paper wrappers bound-in. iv,823+(1); 172 pages.
Despite the huge advances in the development of the British Museum and Library since the beginning of the century, there was still a great deal of public hostility to the manner in which the institution was administered - a situation no doubt compounded by bitter inter-departmental rivalries. Prominent amongst the critics was Thomas Carlyle, who was interviewed at length. John Payne Collier was the far from impartial secretary to the Commission and also provided extensive testimony. It was, however, Panizzi who triumphed. "The report was well received. The Times remarked that it offered ample proof of the diligence, care and impartiality with which they have investigated the large and intricate subject" - (Miller: That Noble Cabinet, p. 182). With the scarce separately issued Index. First volume withdrawn from the library of The Geological Society, with the original presentation slip from Sir. P. Egerton (who sat on both the 1835 & 1836 committees) present, early stamp on verso title-page else contents stamp free; second volume moderate cover wear but a sound copy.
