New Castle Oak Knoll Books and the Delaware Bibliophiles 1991 8vo. quarter cloth, printed paper over boards, leather spine label. 81, (3) pages.
Limited to 200 numbered copies. This work is based on an original article written by Barbara Benson about the general history of papermaking in Delaware. To this has been added two previously published articles - "The Gilpins and their Endless Papermaking Machine" by H.B. Hancock and N.B. Wilkinson; and "Papermaker Joshua Gilpin introduces the Chemical Approach to Papermaking in the U.S." by Sidney M. Edelstein. Finally there is a previously unpublished thesis written by Patricia M. Brown outlining the history of the Curtis Paper Company in Newark, Delaware. This is an important article as little has previously been published about the history of this mill which eventually supplied paper to so many of America's fine book producers. There is also an introduction by Gordon A. Pfeiffer, President of the Delaware Bibliophiles. Henry Morris designed the book and printed it by letterpress at his Bird & Bull Press. The text has been printed on mouldmade paper and the work has been illustrated with four original wood engravings by John DePol. The book is bound in quarter cloth with paper over the boards and a leather spine label. Prospectus loosely inserted.

(Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Company) JOURNAL E: C & D.
N.P. n.p. 1888-1893 folio original full calf, raised bands on spine, title and decorations gilt-stamped 483+(1) pages
Massive ledger of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Company, April 30, 1888 to January 1893. Includes the company's expenditures. Among the entries are many purchases of coal, mostly from the Lehigh Coal and Iron Co., Aurora Coal, and the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Co. Coal was used to operate the locks used by the canal. The Chesapeake and Delaware Canal connects the Delaware River and the Chesapeake Bay, across the northern end of the Delmarva peninsula. First envisioned in the mid-1600s by Augustine Herman, more serious consideration of the construction of the canal began in the late 18th century. The Chesapeake and Delawre Canal Company was incorporated in 1802 by the legislatures of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. Construction began in 1804 but was halted in 1806 by lack of funding. The company was reorganized in 1822, and construction resumed in 1824. The canal opened for business in 1829, with a lock system in place from its opening until 1919. The company operated the canal until 1919, when the U.S. government purchased it. It is currently operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. See Ralph D. Gray, The National Waterway: a History of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, 1769-1985 (Urbanna: University of Illinois Press, 1989) and www.nap.usace.army.mil/cd/. Marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Boards and spine show minor scuffing and rubbing at edges. Well preserved ledger with all pages filled in with accounting information.

Clouse, Doug MACKELLAR, SMITHS & JORDAN: TYPOGRAPHIC TASTEMAKERS OF THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY.
New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2008 8.5 x 11 inches Hardcover, dust jacket. 176 pages
First edition. This is the first full-length study of the leading American type foundry of the nineteenth century. It is an interesting history of the foundry from both a business and a design point of view. The emphasis is on the design of the hundreds of typefaces that were produced by the foundry, from its inception in the 1860s until its merger with most other American foundries at the end of the century. The author describes (with many detailed photographic illustrations) how changing business conditions and technical improvements in typefounding interacted with changes in public taste to modify, over the decades, the appearance of the typefaces that Americans found in their publications. While this is a study of only one of many American foundries, in many ways MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan can stand as an exemplar of all the rest. It was the descendant of the first successful American type foundry, Binny and Ronaldson, started in Philadelphia in 1796. Extensive business records of the firm exist, as do scores of type specimen books and promotional publications of the foundry. All of these have been used extensively by the author. The scores of typefaces illustrated and described are considered as the ever-changing output of a corporation, with lesser emphasis on the individual creators of each typeface. At the turn of the twentieth century, taste turned away from the florid, ornamented style of the earlier decades. Mr. Clouse has shown in this well-written study that the earlier styles were very successful in their own time and should be judged on that basis. A completely illustrated appendix showing MS&J's patented typefaces is extremely helpful.
