Cambridge Cambridge University Library 1992 large 8vo. stiff paper wrappers. xxviii, 164 pages.
Some account records of the early sixteenth-century Cambridge stationer and binder, Garrett Godfrey (????-1539) which were discovered at the Cambridge University Library in the boards of a volume bound by him. Text arranged so that a section of the accounts is transcribed on the left-hand page, with notes and explanations, corresponding line for line, on the right-hand page. Since these records show buyers (often Cambridge tutors), titles and quantities, and prices, one may form some notion of books used at Cambridge in the early 16th century, as well as of the state of the book trade then. With references, appendices (including some material from other Godfrey bindings), and indexes.

Introduction by D.F. McKenzie. Winchester & New Castle, DE St Paul's Bibliographies & Oak Knoll Press 1997 8vo. illustrated, cloth, dust jacket. 334 pages.
Collected here as a homage to Robin Myers, respected book trade historian and editor of the Publishing Pathways Series devoted to studies in book trade and publishing history, these essays uncover the connections between the mechanics of the book trade and their human ends in the learning and transmission of knowledge. They show that the processes and materials involved in the production of books pave the way for larger economic and social issues ranging from business connections, patents, copyrights and their transfer, London's relations with Ireland and America, the Stationers' Company and what transpires when books pass into the hands of customers. This work also includes a memoir of Myers along with a bibliography of her published works.
Here in PART I: THE BOOK TRADE, the contributors discuss a variety of topics: Ann Greening on "A 16th-century stationer and his business connections: the Tottell family documents (1448-1719) at Stationers' Hall," Elisabeth Leedham-Green on "Manasses Vautrollier in Cambridge," David Pearson on "A binding with the arms of the Stationers' Company," Arnold Hunt on "Book trade patents, 1603-1640," Giles Mandelbrote on "Richard Bentley's copies: the ownership of copyrights in the late 17th-century," Michael Harris on "Scratching the surface: engravers, printsellers and the London book trade in the mid-18th century," Scott Mandelbrote on "John Baskett, the Dublin booksellers, and the printing of the Bible, c. 1710-1724," James Tierney on "Dublin-London publishing relations in the 18th-century: the case of George Faulkner," Michael Turner on "A list of the stockholders: the Stationers' Company's English Stock in the 19th-century," and Esther Potter on "The changing role of the trade bookbinder, 1800-1900."
PART II: THE CUSTOMERS include Christine Ferdinand on "Magdalen College and the book trade: the provision of books in Oxford: 1450-1550," Tom Birrell on "The library of Sir Edward Sherburne," Michael Treadwell on "Richard Lapthorne and the London retail book trade, 1683-1697," Alison Shell on "The antiquarian satirized: John Clubbe and the Antiquities of Wheatfield," James Raven on "Gentlemen, pirates and really respectable booksellers: some Charleston customers for Lackington, Allen & Co.," David J.   Myers, Robin and Michael Harris (editors) GENIUS FOR LETTERS: BOOKSELLERS & BOOKSELLING FROM THE SIXTEENTH TO THE TWENTIETH CENTURIES
Winchester & New Castle, DE St Paul's Bibliographies & Oak Knoll Press 1995 8vo. printed paper over boards. 188 pages.
By the mid-eighteenth century bookselling was established as the key factor in the book business. On the one hand, booksellers were at the center of the interlocking range of associated activities involved in the manufacture and distribution of a multi-form product. On the other hand, they helped to shape the consumption of print in the market, responding to and guiding the taste of readers as customers.
Printers, binders, authors, and readers never achieved the corporate force and solidarity of the booksellers who, in England, early on dominated the London Stationers' Company. It was as `publishers' in its increasingly specialist sense of the marketing and distribution of texts, that this commercial sector acquired its authority in the long term. As the owners of valuable copyrights the leading London booksellers laid the foundation of a commercial interest which was never seriously challenged.
The contributors to this volume unravel some of the complexities of the trade organized by business people working at different times and different places but all pursuing what might be called the logic of the market place through the sale of books. Topics include booksellers and bookbinders by Anthony Hobson; Italian bookselling in the eighteenth century by Luigi Balsamo; booksellers and bookshops in late seventeenth-century London by Giles Mandlebrote; and circulating libraries, booksellers and book clubs 1870-1966 by Simon Eliot. Head of spine bumped. Spot on free endpaper.
