Four volumes reprinted in one. Charles Leclerc edited the 1878 catalogue (and supplements) of Americana offered for sale by the French firm Maisonneuve and Co. (Besterman 310, Blogie 634 & 637) By the time of the last supplement (1887), the company's name had changed to Maisonneuve Frères & Ch. Leclerc. The combined work includes well over 3620 entries dealing with North and South (and Central) America and the Philippines. The first catalogue was issued in 1867. First edition. John Russell Bartlett, a major American bibliographer and artist of the Southwest, had a remarkably multi-faceted career. He was for a time a bookseller, Chief of the United States Boundary Commission that established the border with Mexico following the Mexican-American War, Secretary of State of Rhode Island for 17 years, and, for many years, John Carter Browns personal librarian. Bartletts Dictionary of Americanisms saw three editions in the nineteenth century, and was again reprinted in 2000. His Personal Narrative about his years on the Boundary commission is a classic document of Western Americana.
Jerry Mueller has annotated and amplified Bartletts original memoir, adding 30 illustrations. Printed at Stamperia Valdonega, Arbizzano di Verona, Italy, and bound by Legatoria Zanardi Gropu, Padova, Italy. Designed and composed by Mark Argetsinger, Rochester, New York. As the exact size was maintained, it was necessary to place 4 of the facsimiles in a separate portfolio. All but one of the prospectuses done in facsimile come from the Bodleian Library. This book is the kind of private press book that Oak Knoll likes to handle; an important new text presented in a superb format. Prospectus loosely inserted.

Six years of the Danish annual The Bibliophile: vols. 15-20 (1926-1931) of the original series The Bibliophile, which began in 1893, had by the 1920's lost interest in book crafts, and deals more with collecting and bibliophile issues, becoming rather more international in outlook. In 1926, reports on Danish Book auctions are added. There is more coverage of libraries and collections/ collectors, and of current book illustration. The reports on the activities of the Association for Book Crafts (Forening...) cease. The historical and retrospective articles continue, of course. Three volumes have cracked hinges. 1928 lacks the spine covering.

H.G. Bohn (1796-1884) is the best known of the London booksellers and is significant in the history of 19th-century publishing for his success in bringing out classics, standard, or useful works in inexpensive series: the "European Library," the "Standard Library," the "Scientific Library" and so on. (A few of the volumes in his "libraries" were also written by Bohn).This famous "Guinea catalogue" contains over 300,000 books with 23,000 remainders. "The catalogue cost Bohn upwards of 2,000 pounds and made him famous" (Cordasco's The Bohn Libraries). Covers rubbed especially along hinges and edges. Slightly sprung.

The sixth and last part of this famous sale (Blogie 341). Édouard Rahir (1862-1924) was a well-known antiquarian bookseller, bibliographer, and publisher in Paris (for a time the publisher for the Société des Bibliophiles François). He had a long-standing business relationship with Quaritch in London and was the author of La Bibliothèque de l'amateur (1909 & 1924), a guide to book collecting, along with many catalogues, etc. Some items from his library were sold shortly after his death, but the majority were sold between 1930 and 1938. See Arthur Rau, "Edouard Rahir...," pp. 169-177 in the Summer 1967 (vol.16 no.2) issue of the Book Collector. This volume contained many of his examples of bookbinding. Many plates including a number in full color. From the reference library of the Zaehnsdorf Company with a commemorative booklabel loosely inserted. Spine ends damaged.
