See More... (Ardizzone, Edward) Alderson, Brian EDWARD ARDIZZONE, A BIBLIOGRAPHIC COMMENTARY.
New Castle, DE Oak Knoll Press 2003 large 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. Color frontispiece; 309+(1) pages.
First edition. When Edward Ardizzone passed away in 1979, he was one of the best-loved artists (and authors) in the English-speaking world. He illustrated more than 200 books and pamphlets, a good number of which he also wrote, as well as designed dust jackets and ephemera for a range of patrons. Brian Alderson first published a checklist of this work in The Private Library in 1972. Since then, with the co-operation of the artist and his family, he has extended and expanded the coverage of the original list, describing for the first time in a full-scale bibliography Ardizzone's books, dust jackets, commercial work and ephemera, with notes on his periodical contributions, war art, prints, posters and bookplates. Appendices reprint articles by Ardizzone himself and detail the history of two favorite titles - Peacock Pie and Peter Pan - and reproduce Gabriel White's memorial tribute to the artist. Includes a four page color section. SALES RIGHTS: Available in North & South America from Oak Knoll Books. Available outside North & South America from The British Library.

See More... (Bird & Bull Press) Morris, Henry THE ART OF INTAGLIO. PRODUCED ON A LETTERPRESS WITH A COLLECTION OF TWELVE PRINTS OF 18TH CENTURY LONDON TRADESMEN'S CARDS with SCHLOCKER & THE FISHES.
Newtown, PA Bird & Bull Press 2010 8vo. quarter Morocco and Japanese cloth, slipcase 33, 12 plates, 12 pages
Limited to 115 numbered copies. Engravings and etchings (intaglios) are printed on special presses which exert the far greater pressure needed for this kind of printing.

"I had been told that intaglio could not be printed satisfactorily on a letterpress, which is generally true. But in 2009 I tried my hand, printing two intaglio plates successfully by letterpress, albeit not very large ones. In this new book I have printed by letterpress, twelve intaglio plates, some as large as 5" x 6.5".

These images were made from Ambrose Heal's privately published 1925 London Tradesmen's Cards of the Eighteenth Century, which showed 101 collotype prints of old engravings advertising the wares, goods and services offered about 250 years ago. I have been attracted to these "cards"-they are really papers of differing sizes-ever since I got Heal's book fifteen years ago. Thanks to my recent introduction to intaglio, I have returned twelve of these prints to their original 18th century state: you can run your finger over the print and feel the image. Students and collectors of ephemera are acquainted with these cards, but for those who are not, some of Heal's comments may enlighten:

...To anyone with a liking for old things the Trade Card must make an irresistible appeal. It is so convincingly of its own time.
...The old signs that hung over the ship doors and are reproduced on the Traders' Cards are of great antiquity and interest. The names of the old streets, many of which have long since been swept away, such as 'Knaves' Acre,' 'Rosemary Lane,' 'Wendegaynlane,' take one's imagination quite apart from their historical or topographical connections.
...The lettering is invariably well drawn and well spaced and the designing of the devices, if sometimes crude, is always direct and interesting.
They reflect the art of the engraver through two centuries.

A foeword and texts on the Origin of Intaglio, The Process, and background information on Heal and his book, precede the twelve engravings.

But wait-There's More!
On an entirely unrelated subject, a 16-page addition relates an unforgettable event in the early life of Henry Morris, entitled Schlocker & The Fishes, thus making this book my first dos-a-dos binding. This brief account is illustraded with two full-page wood engravings by Wesley Bates. Such accounts generally become booklets but I dislike the impermanence of the booklet, and have long wanted to see this in print."

AN EXHIBITION DRAWN FROM THE EMMA LINEN DANA CZECH AVANT-GARDE BOOK COLLECTION Madison, NJ Fairleigh Dickinson University n.d. (1996) 8.5 x 11.75 inches stiff paper wrappers. 50 pages, with a 5-page typescript index laid in the back.
The exhibition that formed the basis for this catalogue was commissioned by the Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo in 1996 and drawn from the Fairleigh Dickinson University Library's Emma Dana Collection, as well as private collections. The exhibition and resulting catalogue examine one stream in Czech publishing between the wars - the work of the avant-garde. The examples on display demonstrate the links between Czech artists and the European avant-garde, which largely inspired them, and also make clear the Czechs' own special contributions to the international avant-garde movement. In addition, the exhibition places the work of the Czech avant-garde in context by the inclusion of a number of works by artists working in more traditional styles.

Includes a preface by James Howard Fraser and an introductory comment by Blanka Stehlikova, who also wrote an essay on "The Czech Avant-garde and Book Design: An Overview," and the catalogue of the exhibition. Includes full color reproductions of 89 items.

See More... (Fore-Edge Painting) Bennett, Jeanne HIDDEN TREASURES, THE HISTORY AND TECHNIQUE OF FORE-EDGE PAINTING
Texas Calliope Press 2012 small 4to cloth, dust jacket
Fore-edge paintings are individually painted, one-of-a-kind works of art. Because they are highly valued by collectors, many are held captive in private libraries. Even more are hidden away from the general public in university and public libraries. They are carefully protected because a fore-edge painted book would be destroyed by too many hands fanning the pages wanting to see the hidden painting magically appear.

The first part of Hidden Treasures focuses on the history of fore-edge painting through the present as well as giving us a detailed interview with the world reknowned fore-edge painter Martin Frost.

The second part provides two (beginner & intermediate) sections on step-by-step instructions on how to create your own fore-edge painting. By fanning open, then clamping the fore-edge of a book (the pages opposite the spine), a surface is formed composed of the tiny exposed edges of each page. A miniature watercolor painting is then applied to these edges. When the book is closed, the painting disappears. Edge decoration, such as gold gilt or marbling, hides the painting so the fore-edge painting is seen only when the pages are fanned.

Now, you can make your own fore-edge paintings! Jeanne Bennetts new book, Hidden Treasures: The History and Technique of Fore-edge Painting, to be released in February 2012 by Calliope Press, is the first book ever to give authoritative and definitive step-by-step instructions for painting the fore-edges of books.

LEARN THE BASICS
Even if you have never painted before, the fully illustrated instructions in this book will guide you through every step needed to create your own fore-edge paintings:
How to select the right materials and books
How to prepare the fore-edge for painting
How to fan and clamp the book in the press
How to choose and transfer your design
How to control the watercolor layers
How to complete a fore-edge painting
How to use advanced tools and materials

HIDE THE PAINTING - BIND YOUR BOOK
When your fore-edge painting is finished, learn through step-by-step instructions how to hide the painting and make softbound books into elegant hardbound books.

The final part of the book shows beautiful color examples of work done by professional fore-edge painters and students alike. Signed by the author on the title page.

Revised by D. Steven Corey and Julia Mackenzie. Winchester St Paul's Bibliographies 1991 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. xv, 368 pages.
Decades have passed since the death of Eric Gill (1882-1940) and yet the reputation of this remarkable artist and thinker continues to grow. Famous for his stone carving, wood engraving, type designs and writing, he has also found a wide appeal amongst a younger generation who are sympathetic to his outlook on life - to "make a cell of good living in the chaos of our world." Since the original bibliography by Gill's brother, Evan, was published in 1953, a great deal of new material has come to light in the fine collections built up in the USA and elsewhere in recent years, and this new edition is a complete revision of the original bibliography. It includes not only all the new discoveries but also the material published on Gill in the last thirty-eight years. The number of bibliographical entries has increased by over one third in this greatly expanded work. The book has been redesigned with advice from Gill's nephew, Christopher Skelton, placing greater emphasis on the illustrations, which have been either retaken from the original editions or introduced as completely new ones of bibliographical interest.

New Castle, DE Oak Knoll Press 2003 small 4to. cloth, dust jacket 288 pages
First edition. The Golden Cockerel Press, one of the foremost publishers of illustrated books, was the most important and productive of the English private presses during the period of 1920-1960. This notable work is the first extensive study of the press, based on interviews and the Press' widely-scattered archives. Richly illustrated with sixteen pages of color illustrations and over 150 black-and-white illustrations, this work delves into the history of the press and discusses and assesses its important private press books. Closely associated with the revival of wood-engraving, the Golden Cockerel Press books were vehicles for the work of such artists as Robert Gibbings, Eric Gill, David Jones, Agnes Miller Parker, Eric Ravilious, John Buckland-Wright and others. Unlike other fine presses that succumbed to the Depression or closed during the Second World War, Golden Cockerel continued to produce outstanding books. The Press' literary achievement was as significant as its artistic contribution through its publication of original manuscripts by writers such as H.E. Bates, A.E. Coppard and T.E. Lawrence. This work also reveals how the market for fine books was created and sustained, and it provides many insights into other aspects of the British publishing scene. A bibliography of all books printed by the Golden Cockerel Press is included. SALES RIGHTS: Available in North & South America from Oak Knoll Books. With a Foreword by L.F. Thompson. Merrickville Greyweathers Press 2010 4to cloth-backed paper covered boards, paper cover and spine labels. 6, 13 wood cuts, (2) pages
First edition. One of 100 numbered copies. Wood engravers toiling away at their trade during the last quarter of the nineteenth century could be forgiven for feeling a touch of despair. Since the early 1800s, they had practiced a viable trade, with graver in hand over an endgrain block, cutting illustrations for a healthy proportion of books, newspapers and periodicals. In the 1880s, they witnessed the advent of photomechanical printing plates and, in direct competition, felt the ominous rising tide of obsolescence. As this new technology became more efficient, less expensive and generally accepted over the next twenty years, commercial wood engravers would begin to pack up their blocks, wrap up their tools and seek other employment. It could well be this very occurrence that lay behind the discovery, 130 years on, of a collection of nineteenth century engraved boxwood blocks and, ultimately, the creation of this portfolio.
Beautiful privately printed book featuring thirteen wood engravings from Samuel Smith Kilburn, Boston, George Matthews, Boston & Montreal F. Archibald.

See More... Hodgson, Bernard and Geoffrey M. Hodgson IMPRESSIONS OF WAR; THE MEMOIRS OF HERBERT HODGSON 1893-1974.
Rutland, UK Martlet Books 2010 8vo cloth, dust jacket vi, 138 pages
Limited to 300 copies. Born in South London in 1893, Herbert Hodgson is now regarded as "one of the great printers of the twentieth century". In the opening chapter of this book he gives a vivid account of life a century ago in the poorer areas of the capital.

After an apprenticeship as a printer, he served from 1915 to 1918 in France and Belgium in the First World War. His account of life and death in the trenches is moving and forceful. It is one of the few memoirs of the First World War that is not written by an officer and it provides a unique point of view from the other ranks.

In a battle in April 1918 he found a mud-encrusted Bible in a shell hole. Amazingly, 92 years later, the original owner of this Bible has been traced to Private Richard Cook from New Zealand.

From 1923-26 Herbert Hodgson printed the extremely rare subscribers edition of T. E. Lawrences Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Copies of this work now attract prices of up to US$80,000 each.

Hodgson then worked for nine years at the Gregynog Press in Mid-Wales where he created 24 more printing masterpieces. His period at Gregynog came to an end in 1936 because of lack of employment prospects for his growing family. He returned to London. Then came the Second World War and the London Blitz in which one of his sisters was killed.

His memoirs are a moving personal account of a master craftsman and his family facing the upheavals of the first half of the twentieth century.

Stroud Catalpa Press 1983 4to. cloth. 157, (6) pages.
First edition. Volume 1 in The Artist and the Critic Series. The spirited, prolific career of Laurence Housman (1865-1959) was that of one of the most enigmatic, talented, skillful polymaths of the late-Victorian period. His drawings of fairies and elegant, Pre-Raphaelite women were admired for their evocative, atmospheric qualities, while his critics dismissed them as borrowed from William Blake, William Morris and the more devilish aspects of Beardsley. He was a draughtsman and book designer, who turned to writing verse, fantasy stories, novels, essays and scandalous plays on the royals. The pioneer feminist, pacifist and socialist, Housman was as outspoken as he was enchanting. His life and work is an invaluable reflection of the taste and popular opinions of an early twentieth century anxious to shrug off the mantle of the Victorians. Yet Housman himself remained a true Victorian to the end. He was the prophet of fantasy: the pure, simple guide through a rapidly confused and complicated world. This important reference work contains a biography, a complete annotated bibliography and reprints of critical essays on Housman.

2 volumes. Berlin Triton 2000 4to. linen-covered boards, both volumes enclosed in a linen slipcase. 391,(3) pages; 20 inserts in portfolio.
Printed in an edition of 2000 copies. Volume I of a series of three installments, not yet completed. Praised as "a masterpiece of book production" and "a product of enthusiasts" by critic Wilfried F. Schoeller, the book traces the early 20th-century history of the Insel publishing house. Insel earned its renown by turning book production into an art form as it printed the works of classic authors and gave a new generation of writers, such as Rainer Maria Rilke, their start. The editor, Brinks, reveals Insel's high aesthetic standards through sumptuous illustrations of its work. In all, there are 240 illustrations, seven of which are foldouts, many polychrome with three and four colors, and many with stunning gold print. One splendid example of the high-quality illustrations is the foldout of a series of classics, The Thousand and One Nights and the Decameron, the bindings designed by Marcus Behmer. The colors are so rich and the detail so striking that the reader almost feels he can touch and leaf through the deckled pages of the books shown. Another example depicted is that of Henry van de Velde's designs for the covers of Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra, as well as sample pages from the edition, both finely detailed with gold print. Text edited by Brinks with seventeen essays contributed by him and twelve other specialists such as Juergen Suess, Marcus Haucke, and Suzanne Buchinger. Essays beautifully printed with wide margins and double-spaced on Gardapat paper in cursive Borgis White Antiqua. Outstanding documentation for the essays at the back of the book, as well as detailed indices for artwork and literary sources. Accompanying the book is a slim briefcase volume containing twelve facsimile resolution papers and eight folder reproductions in their original format. Hartford, Connecticut Watkinson Library, Trinity College 2011 10 x 8 inches paperback pamphlet 24 pages
To honor a gift given to the Watkinson Library by M. William McGill, this catalogue is an illustrated checklist of the works of British architectural and topographical artist John Piper. In the late 1920s, Piper attended both the Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art, and by the 1930s he was working steadily as an artist hardly earning a living. While his mother wrote articles for The Architectural Review to publicize his work, Piper developed a friendship with poet John Betjeman. This friendship significantly helped both of their professional careers. Piper's reputation continued to develop, and he eventually moved away from abstract art to a more representational style. Through his work, Piper learned how colors and textures reacted with one another, a concept continually displayed throughout his art.

This catalogue contains works by Piper, works about Piper, exhibitions and catalogues, miscellaneous Piper-ana, and works illustrated by Piper. It also includes an opening essay on Piper by William McGill. With both black-and-white and color images and a letterpress-printed cover, John Piper in the Watkinson is beautifully produced in a striking and appealing format.

With the CD "Illustrations: Supplement to the Book" New Castle and London Oak Knoll Press and the British Library 2007 7 x 10 inches cloth, dust jacket. 230 pages plus 8 pages of plates
Jessie M. King (1875-1949) was the foremost Scottish book designer and illustrator of the 20th century. Her work reflected the mixture of Symbolism and Arts & Crafts practiced by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the others of "The Four" in Glasgow where she was trained. During the 50 years of her career she designed and illustrated some 250 books, over 100 greeting cards, bookplates and assorted items of ephemera.

A Guide to the Printed Work of Jessie M. King attempts to bring order to this enormous output. Every known item has been annotated, classified and catalogued, and a further section lists over 100 publications containing reproductions of other works by the artist. An appendix by Dr. A.D. Portno discusses her work for the German publishers, Globus. A second appendix investigates her designs for Routledge's series of children's classics.

In order to do justice to Jessie M. King's talent, besides the selection of items illustrated in the book, a substantial part of her work is illustrated in color on an accompanying CD-Rom. On the CD, every significant item is present, with each illustration numbered according to the corresponding entry in the text.

Colin White is an art historian specializing in the early 20th century. His published works include biographies of Edmund Dulac and Jessie M. King and a history of objects of artistic interest found in nurseries. He is at work on a biography of Kay Nielsen. He has written books on Sentimentality in Art, Decorative Headpieces and Tailpieces, and one on the influence of the Japanese No on the plays of W.B. Yeats. He has published articles on the bookplates of Jessie M. King and of Edward Ardizzone, as well as a survey for the Wolfson Foundation of the art of Thomas Mackenzie.

See More... (Larsson, Carl) Topjon, Ann J. CARL LARSSON: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
New Castle Oak Knoll Press 2008 4to. cloth, dust jacket. 454 pages
First edition. Carl Larsson (1853-1919) is perhaps the most renowned Swedish artist, in his own country and beyond. He rose from an impoverished childhood and youth to find the perfect expression for his artistic talent in watercolors, winning medals in France at the Salons. His works in this medium became widely known through eight "albums" of his home and family, which he not only illustrated but also narrated and which were successfully marketed in Germany as well as in Sweden. These books were published in several editions during his lifetime and reissued, some in revised format, starting in the latter twentieth century. Along with being an exquisite watercolorist, Larsson also was a talented illustrator, a superb portrait painter, a fine graphic artist and an imaginative muralist, who was influenced by pre-Raphaelitism, Art Nouveau, arts of the Gustavian period and Japonisme. Possibly the most providential factor in his life was his marriage to Karin Bergöö. Together, in the small cottage in Sundborn given to them by her father, they created a home with unique and personal interiors, which influenced generations of interior designers through the twentieth and into the twenty-first century. This is the first comprehensive bibliography on Larsson and, with approximately 5900 entries, encompasses all known works by him, including albums, book illustrations and any articles he wrote and/or illustrated in all languages and countries.
