See More... Hopkins, Joseph G.E. (editor) CONCISE DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY.
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1964 small 4to. dust jacket. xii, 1,273 pages.
Abridgement of the Dictionary of American Biography with the same number of entries (14,870) but much reduced in length. The degree of trimming seems to have varied inversely to the importance (as perceived in 1964) of the person covered: minor figures may have very attenuated entries; the most important are still relatively well-covered. Thus Emily Dickinson receives the better part of a column, whereas we learn of Sarah Piatt (beyond places and dates) only that she was a "Poet. Wife of James Piatt." Jacket chipped with small tears along edges.

See More... (Housman, Laurence) Engen, Rodney K. LAURENCE HOUSMAN.
Stroud Catalpa Press 1983 4to. cloth. 157, (6) pages.
First edition. Volume 1 in The Artist and the Critic Series. The spirited, prolific career of Laurence Housman (1865-1959) was that of one of the most enigmatic, talented, skillful polymaths of the late-Victorian period. His drawings of fairies and elegant, Pre-Raphaelite women were admired for their evocative, atmospheric qualities, while his critics dismissed them as borrowed from William Blake, William Morris and the more devilish aspects of Beardsley. He was a draughtsman and book designer, who turned to writing verse, fantasy stories, novels, essays and scandalous plays on the royals. The pioneer feminist, pacifist and socialist, Housman was as outspoken as he was enchanting. His life and work is an invaluable reflection of the taste and popular opinions of an early twentieth century anxious to shrug off the mantle of the Victorians. Yet Housman himself remained a true Victorian to the end. He was the prophet of fantasy: the pure, simple guide through a rapidly confused and complicated world. This important reference work contains a biography, a complete annotated bibliography and reprints of critical essays on Housman.

2 volumes. Oxford Clarendon Press 1979 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. xxvi,732; viii,488 pages.
Volumes IV and V of the Index to British Literary Bibliography. Volume IV covers that literature (other than that on specific authors) from about 1890 to 1969 on "works printed or published in Britain from 1475 to the present..." which deals with "bibliographic or textual matters" and "the conditions under which British books were produced and disseminated, with consequent effects on their texts": in short, whatever is needed to determine "the authority and correctness of a text" (introduction, vol. IV). Vol. V covers the same topics with regard to individual authors. Volume IV is arranged by subject, vol. V by author's names. 14,616 brief, numbered entries (15,156, counting some Shakespeare entries printed in vol. V but indexed as if they were in Volume II: Shakespearian Bibliography...). These two volumes are a complete set in themselves (apart from Shakespeare), except that they lack an index (which appeared in vol. VI). With the pencil signature of Gavin Bridson.
