See More... Petzholdt, Julius. HANDBUCH DEUTSCHER BIBLIOTHEKEN [HANDBOOK OF GERMAN LIBRARIES].
Halle H.W. Schmidt 1853 large 12mo. modern cloth, leather spine label. iii-xii, 444 pages, with 7 additional leaves of plates.
Per author's preface, this work takes the place of a fourth edition of his Address Book of German Libraries (first published 1844). One might prefer simply to call this the fourth edition of a variously titled (the title changed again later) guide to German-language libraries. Julius Petzholdt (1812-1891) was the librarian of the then Royal Library in Dresden (Saxony), and is called "one of the most learned bibliographers" by Breslauer & Folter (p.168). This "handbook" contains entries for over 1,000 academic, public, institutional, special and a few private libraries in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Petzholdt attempted to gather extensive information on at least the larger libraries, including history of the library, major accessions, holdings, organization and regulation, statistics, and library publications (catalogues). He did not always succeed, and while some entries are quite extensive, some are quite brief. The additional plates contain drawings of various library floor plans with one elevation. Recently rebound in green cloth with gilt lettering on a leather spine label. Small internal tears have been repaired. Some foxing.

The former lists 42 items with four illustrations, and the latter lists 444 items with no illustrations. All the catalogues have a loosely laid-in plate, which indicates that they came from the reference library and stock of H.P. Kraus. All are worn and soiled. Liste 14 is creased across both wrappers with a rust stain at the lower staple in the spine. Katalog 86 has a dampstain at the tail through the wrappers and leaves. Liste 126 is tanned and creased at the lower front corner.

(Rilke, Rainer Maria) Obermüller and Herbert Steiner KATALOG DER RILKE-SAMMLUNG RICHARD VON MISES
(Frankfurt) Insel-Verlag (1966) small 4to. cloth with leather title label, slipcase 431, (4) pages
First edition of this bibliography of the works of Rilke. The Austrian writer Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) is remembered as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century for his emotional, insightful, sensual poetry. He answered his calling at an early age: his first volume of poetry was published when he was only twenty years old. Though he was born in Prague, he spent his life traveling and working all over Europe--in Italy, Spain, Switzerland and France.
This book catalogues the items in the collection of Richard von Mises (1883-1953), the Austrian mathematician and scholar. He taught in Strausburg, Dresden and Berlin before complications arising during World War Two compelled him move to the United States, where he accepted a post teaching at Harvard University. Hugely influential in the field of mathematics and hydro- and aerodynamics, von Mises also fostered his interest in philosophy and poetry. In particular, he was recognized as one of the leading authorities on Rilke. This bibliography contains over 1,700 entries of early and rare printings of Rilke's works, as well as translations, periodicals, recordings, sources, and pieces on Rilke. Frontispiece is a tipped-in color portrait of Rilke from a painting. Loose bookplate indicates that this copy was purchased from the collection of H.P. Kraus.

Vienna Krystall-Verlag-Ges. 1926 4to. quarter cloth with paper-covered boards, gilt embossed design on front cover 64, (8) pages + 40 leaves of plates in black and white
Volume 4 of the serial publication, Artes Austriae: Studien zur Kunstgeschichte Österreichs. Surveys Austrian painters in the age of Duke Ernst the Iron (1377--1424) until King Albrecht II, both members of the Hapsburg family. Legend tells us that both Duke Ernst and his wife could bend horseshoes with their bare hands. Albrecht (1397--1439) became king in 1437. In addition to the discussion of the Austrian school of painting in the early fifteenth century, this study focuses on the so-called Albrecht-Altar. This altarpiece of the Carmelite church in Vienna was formerly thought to be commissioned by King Albrecht II; however, later restorations revealed the coat of arms of the real patron, the high-ranking official Oswald Oberndorffer. Twenty-one scenes of this altar illustrated in black-and-white with a number of other examples of Austrian religious paintings. Loose bookplate indicates that this copy was purchased from the collection of H.P. Kraus. Covers irregularly faded. Spine soiled.
