See More... Alison, Jennifer. DOING SOMETHING FOR AUSTRALIA: GEORGE ROBERTSON AND THE EARLY YEARS OF ANGUS AND ROBERTSON, PUBLISHERS, 1888-1900
Melbourne Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand 2009 6.75 x 9.75 inches hardcover 332 pages
From tentative beginnings in 1888, Angus and Robertson soon hit their stride as publishers with the publication of Banjo Paterson's verses The Man from Snowy River. This book was a phenomenal success, surprising even its publishers. Snowy River was quickly followed by two successful Henry Lawson titles, In the Days When the World was Wide and While the Billy Boils.

From this foundation, Angus and Robertson went on to publish books for the Australian community for the better part of the next hundred years. The powerful force in the early publishing was George Robertson, who devoted himself to the task and who, with the continuing success of the firm's many books, truly believed he was "doing something for Australia."

This book tells the story of how Angus and Robertson operated as a business to achieve their success, which in effect tells the story of George Robertson himself.

Jennifer Alison is a graduate of the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales. She worked as a librarian at the State Library of New South Wales and the University of Sydney. She has previously written on the Australian book trade, preservation of text, and the Australian private press movement.

Distributed for the Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand. Available in Australia and New Zealand from the publisher.

See More... Chanin, Eileen BOOK LIFE: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DAVID SCOTT MITCHELL.
New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2012 6 x 9.25 inches paperback 496 pages
Australia's greatest book collector, David Scott Mitchell, gave his extraordinary library and a bequest for its development to the people of Sydney and the world. Book Life: The Life and Times of David Scott Mitchell, by Eileen Chanin, is the first comprehensive account of his life and collecting, told through books, readings, and contemporary correspondence.

Mitchell was a man of astoundingly diverse interests whose collection was not merely for show or posterity, but was, in fact, his own personal reading library. Thus, we can learn much about him by examining his books. Previously labeled as an enigma and portrayed as recluse, Mitchell's true self is revealed through this book. Many books in his collection were written by people he knew, and letters reveal a more socially connected Mitchell than ever seen before. Chanin also delves into the historical events he lived through and their impact on his life and collection.

The growth of Australia from an island of criminals to a legitimate nation happened almost literally during Mitchell's lifetime. Mitchell collected books on Australian history before it was even studied at Melbourne University. Without his contributions, it is unlikely that a full history of Australia could be written.

In the foreword, Bob Carr, former Premier of New South Wales, praises Mitchell's benevolence and hails the Mitchell Library as the "DNA of Australia." The story of his life and collection is important to the story of Australia as a nation and is "in danger of slipping from history."

This book features dozens of color illustrations and black-and-white photographs. Also included are notes, bibliography, index, a list of dramatis personae and several family trees.

The first edition sold out within six months - ahead of news that the book was awarded the 2011 Alex Buxo Prize and shortlisted for the prestigious Waverley Library Award for Literature sponsored by the Copyright Agency Limited's Cultural Fund. The book was also one of five books shortlisted for the 2012 Magarey Medal for Biography, awarded by the Australian Historical Association.

Sydney Hordern House 2008 9.5" x 6.5" hardcover 327 pages
First edition. This book traces the genesis of the Barrington books in rich and evocative detail, offering a compelling account of publishing history in England and on the continent, and displaying the subtle machinations of the book trade in a world without copyright laws. Throughout, The Celebrated George Barrington combines the rigour of book history and bibliographical research with a fresh and engaging style. Of special interest is Garvey's authoritative bibliography of the Barrington books, with extensive notes and detailed collation details, destined to become a standard reference for librarians, scholars and booksellers. With more than eighty separate works noticed, this is the first comprehensive account of the Barrington books and the first to chart the publishing history of the works about and attributed to George Barrington, which have long remained a source of confusion for students of early Australian history. Elegantly printed in two-colours, and bound in red cloth with a full-colour dustjacket, the work includes some twenty-six illustrations, all taken from the early Barrington books.

Nathan Garvey was born in Dalby, Queensland. He graduated from the University of Queensland in 2000, and was awarded a doctorate from the university of Sydney in 2007. Author of a number of articles on early Australian literature and the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century book trade, he is the C. H. Currey Memorial Fellow at the State Library of New South Wales for 2008. This is his first book.

See More... (Grey, George) Kerr, Donald Jackson AMASSING TREASURES FOR ALL TIMES: SIR GEORGE GREY, COLONIAL BOOKMAN AND COLLECTOR
Dunedin, New Zealand and New Castle, Delaware Otago University Press and Oak Knoll Press 2006 6 x 9.25 hardcover, dust jacket 352 pages
Sir George Grey, governor of New Zealand, South Australia and the Cape Colony, was an outstanding British colonial statesman in the nineteenth century. Less well known of Grey is that we he was also an obsessive collector of rare books and artifacts, which he selflessly bequeathed to the people he governed. Through these items, we are given a look into Grey's less -publicized private life. There are actually two "Grey Collections" in the southern hemisphere, each with almost identical statues and similar collections. He assembled an extraordinary collection and then donated the entire assemblage to Cape Town in 1861. He continued to purchase rarities and other manuscripts and donated his second collection from his private library to Auckland. Grey gathered items from classic European book culture, as well as artifacts and items from the indigenous peoples of the southern continents and islands to preserve their culture. Due to his Victorian upbringing, he had a very real hunger for knowledge in his pursuits of the rare. A timeline of Grey's life is included after a lovely foreword by Christopher de Hamel and some acknowledgements from the author.
Everyone seeking a glimpse into the life of Sir George Grey from a viewpoint other than his famous political life in Cape Colony, South Australia, and New Zealand or anyone wanting to read about a fascinating collector of the rare will enjoy this volume. There is also great appeal for those who are intrigued by the indigenous cultures of the regions in which Grey lived and those who have a love of classic European manuscripts.
