See More... (Center for Book Arts) ARTIST AS PUBLISHER
(New York Center for Book Arts 2008) large 8vo. stiff paper wrappers 32 pages
Organized by Omar Lopez-Chahoud, Independent Curator, and held in New York from July 9 to September 13, 2008, this exhibition examines art publications produced by artists and collaboratives. The publications selected for the exhibitions each embody a spirit of collaboration and experimentation and a DIY ethos. Independent publication allows artists to bypass the gallery system, and to make art cheaply and distribute it on their own terms. The curator invited several groups to set up reading rooms throughout the Center where viewers could engage directly with their work. Digitally printed with color illustrations.

See More... (Center for Book Arts) Blocker, Mare ISTORIATO.
(New York Center for Book Arts 2001) 11" x 11" Round shaped, case bound concertina, with printed navy Iris cloth on both the book covers and lidded clamshell box n.p.
Limited to an edition of 50 signed and numbered copies. Istoriato is an Italian narrative style of pottery decoration which uses the pottery body solely as support for a purely pictorial effect. Originating about 1500 in Faenza, Italy, paintings comparable in seriousness to Italian Renaissance easel paintings were applied to Maiolica ware. The subjects, biblical, historical, and mythological scenes, are executed with a realism (including the use of perspective) quite unlike any previous pottery decoration. Although violating aesthetic rules in their subordination of shape to decoration, such wares remain works of great skill, as well as beauty.

During her Sally R. Bishop residency at the Center, Mare Blocker explored how the design of this pottery changed with the invention of the printing press. Multiple color linoeleum blocks and type were printed on Magnani Pescia. Produced at the Center for Book Arts, each boxed set also includes a unique plate decorated in the style of Maiolica pottery.

See More... (Center for Book Arts) Bringhurst, Robert NEW WORLD SUITE NUMBER THREE
(New York Center for Book Arts 2005) 17" x 17", four 8.5 x 11 books black cloth with paper label three 28 pages, one at 20 pages
Edition limited to 75 signed and numbered copies, including five artist proofs, with only 25 copies for sale. This innovative interdisciplinary work intersects at the pinnacle of creative writing, graphic design, book art, and performance. This is a poem for three voices, meant to be read by three people at once. In addition to the poem, the author has written an afterword articulating the evolution of his polyphonic poetry, documenting for the reader a history of this definitive edition. The work is made to be performed, and his essay concludes, "The printed text should be as fine as it can be, but it should never be the final incarnation. A book must be a place where things begin."

The display type was set by hand, and the text was printed by the Center's Master Printer, Barbara Henry at their Jane Mead Timken Printshop in three separate colors in Monotype Dante by, with composition by the Bixler Foundry in Skaneateles, NY.The text was then hand word and line spaced at the Center by Ms. Henry to Robert Bringhurst's exacting specifications. Mr. Bringhurst created the typographic design for the book, as well as the text. Hedi Kyle designed the innovative binding structure specifically for New World Suite Number Three. When opened, each volume within the book forms its own lectern. The poetry for each voice has been bound in heavy blue cardstock, while the afterword was done in burnt orange. When closed, the book has a stunning three dimensional architectural presence. It was produced at the Center for Book Arts under the supervision of Master Binder, Mirah von Wicht, who studied traditional bookbinding in Germany, book conservation in the USA, and worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and by artists Jennifer Bantz Biddle, Ana Cordeiro, Nancy Loeber and Linda Trimbath.

New York Center for Book Arts 2009 square 8vo. stiff paper wrappers 32 pages
Text and image are two forms of communication that have enormous potential to combine, intermingle, blend, and flow - thus creating new modes of expression. This exhibition, held in New York from April 15 to June 27, 2009, features over thirty artists, whose backgrounds are in different media, including painting, sculpture, video and performance art, printing, and the book arts. These artists are exhibiting new work that exemplifies the creative dynamism of melding the written word with visual arts. Exhibition Curator Rocío Aranda-Alvarado says: "Through the imaginative prism of these artists, it's no longer necessary to regard text and image as separate substances, like oil and water. Instead, they have profound potential to blend and create a synthesis of expressive forms, something beyond the realm of traditional media." Digitally printed with color illustrations.

New York Center for Book Arts 2010 12.5 x 12.5 inches LP Record Jacket one sheet folded, printed on both sides
This exhibition brings multi-media, mixed media, and performance art to the forefront in book arts through albums as a biography, a book, an exhibition catalogue, and many other varieties by exploring and intertwining the aspects of recordings and books, and the idea that any document can exist through sound.

The invention of the album made way for the recording of sound just as the printing press made way for the mass production of books. Many artists today explore the connection between sound and the written word, and the way these two can be interchanged. This is demonstrated through examples of albums as biographies, books with sound components, and books as musical scores.

See More... (Center for Book Arts) "Jaldaboath" STREET LIFE IN LONDON REDEEMED.
created by Andrew Atkinson (New York Center for Book Arts 2003) small 8vo. black cloth with title illustration in gray on cover 24 pages
Published in a limited edition of 50 copies, each signed and numbered by "Jaldaboath." An early example of social and documentary photography, Street Life in London, by Adolph Smith and John Thomson, is the basis of this volume. Originally published in 1878, it was a project to photograph the street life of the London poor using the Woodburytype photomechanical process.

The Nag Hammadi Library is the source of information about the worldview of the Gnostics and their blend of Platonic knowledge and Christo-Judaic understanding of the world. Characters from the Nag Hammadi texts are used as quasi historical people, involved in seeking redemption. Jaldaboath is a fallen character within gnosis, and as creator of the mundane world, is seeking to redeem himself through mundane means, namely through a neurotic and modern attachment to the safety signs that articulate our bureaucratic environments. Jaldaboath's work is the principle object of study within the findings of the recently re-opened Nag Hammadi site and an endless source of interest and pity to Pistis Sophia, who edits, compiles, and interprets the photographs, writings, objects, and miscellany of the absent Jaldaboath in an effort to unveil the modern world.

Andrew Atkinson re-conceptualized the original source material to create a conceptual work of art. He printed this work during his 2003 Sally R. Bishop Residency. Includes three black-and-white photographs individually mounted on separate pages.
