In the first half of the twentieth century, some of America's leading financiers, executives, and philanthropists played "this book-collecting game" (as A. Their booksellers were no less newsworthy, and one of the most astute, knowledgeable, and flamboyant of them all was Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach of Philadelphia. Dr. R., as the press liked to call him, helped to build some of America's greatest collections, and his own library, assembled from the treasures that he took home for himself rather than put into his stock, still draws vistors and researchers from around the world.

Dr. Rosenbach and Mr. Lilly: Book Collecting in a Golden Age is the story of one collector, Josiah Kirby Lilly, Jr., of Indianapolis, and the books and manuscripts that he bought from Dr. Rosenbach. The story is told through the many letters that they exchanged, and through the descriptions and illustrations of the books and manuscripts themselves. Though this book is the story of only one collector and bookseller, it is also a microcosm of a great age of book collecting, in which choices were made by booksellers and collectors alike that shaped the contents of some of the greatest research libraries of our own day.

This book is a collection of essays by eminent scholars regarding the study of eighteenth-century literature. The essays are in tribute to former Grolier Club President, Donald F. Hyde. Hyde was very active in the Club and after becoming President in 1961, he began revitalizing the library and rehabilitating the clubhouse. He also proposed and organized the Iter Italicum, a legendary Grolier tour, and brought life back to the Club after the depression and war. In addition to his Grolier Club presidency, Hyde was also president of the Bibliographical Society of America, trustee of the New York Public Library and the Pierpont Morgan Library, and a member of the advisory committees of Harvard, Yale, and other university libraries.

Essays are written by Edward A. Bloom, W. Jackson Bate, Louis A. Landa, Charles Ryskamp, Sidney Ives, Carey McIntosh, L.F. Powell, Reuben A. Brower, and others. The book includes four full-page illustrations and is contained in a slipcase printed with an overall pattern of the Club device. It was designed by Joseph Blumenthal, printed by the Spiral Press and the Meriden Gravure Company, and was a winner of an AIGA Fifty Books of the Year award.

David Watkinson's Library narrates the founding and history of the David Watkinson Library from 1866 to 1966. Curated by Susan Danforth, the exhibition that formed the basis for this catalogue demonstrated how the urge to collect, preserve, and ultimately share books can, however subtly, affect the physical character of the book itself. With a focus on acquisitions made in the nineteenth century - including several made by founder John Carter Brown - this exhibition uses selections from the Library collection to illustrate some of the effects that taste and trends in book collecting have had on the book as an object.

Some typical practices of the era-such as the use of book brands, ink library stamps on title pages and elaborate bindings-did not affect the integrity of the book as an expression of an idea, but according to Danforth, other practices are more problematic. The nineteenth-century collector's acceptance of "sophistication" (the gathering together of bits and pieces of several copies of a publication to make one "complete" volume) is a concern to scholars interested in textual integrity. Similarly, the use of carefully constructed facsimiles to complete imperfect books encouraged the specialized talents of artists and printers; the work of these skilled craftsmen could fool the eye of the casual observer and sometimes cause consternation in scholars' and collectors' circles. Knowledge of these past practices is helpful to today's scholars who use rare books as research material.

The JCB exhibition has been grouped into four broad categories: identification, embellishment, restoration, and an exploration of the challenges presented by facsimiles. Among the items on display are long-collected books published by Aldus Manutius and Theodor DeBry, as well as a section on the Aldines. The latter group of special books was actively collected as early as the sixteenth century and just as enthusiastically presented to the buying public in forged editions.

Dibdin was the self-proclaimed "father of bibliomania" and founder of the legendary Roxburghe Club. Mary Hyde Eccles showcases the writings of a notable American female collector, scholar, and author. As an active member of the Grolier Club, Mary Eccles represented the best the Club had to offer. Eccles was an exhibition curator, a contributor to the Gazette, and a generous donor to the Club. Reprint of the 1918 edition which was limited to 300 numbered copies. The first part (Coll. Marks), by Louis Fagan of the British Museum, first appeared in 1883 and contains 671 "marks" for book owners (individuals or institutions): Signatures, initials, monograms, stamps, stars, crosses, coats of arms, intertwined forms and "other marks and devices," all reproduced in facsimile. The accompanying list indicates, to the extent known, the collector or owner to whom the mark refers and gives information on the sale of the collection to which the mark pertains. Fagan identifies about three-fourths of the marks with regard to ownership, with auction information for perhaps one-half. With index. A following "supplement" lists fifty variants of the marks already reproduced. The last part ("new contributions") is an addition by the editors of this edition, Milton Einstein and Max Goldstein, and lists 205 additional marks, many of them from America (e.g. M. Cassatt, J.P. Morgan), following the format of part one, although a smaller portion of marks are identified.

With this volume the Baltimore Bibliophiles celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their founding, demonstrating the flourishing of bibliophily in Baltimore and the vigor of the organization. Included in the book are an account and a catalogue of early children's books in Baltimore by Linda F. Lapides. A separate section presents the historical record of the organization.
In 1954 two remarkably learned and energetic women, Dorothy E. Miner, of the Walters Art Gallery, and Elizabeth Baer, of the Garrett Library at Evergreen House, founded the Baltimore Bibliophiles. Since then the club has met regularly to share fellowship in support of (in the words of its constitution) "matters pertaining to books and manuscripts and the collecting thereof, bookbindings, typography, printing, paper, calligraphy, prints and book illustration, maps, and aspects of the book arts such as bookbinding, book conservation, book design and related fields" and to hear papers, scholarly and entertaining, delivered by Baltimoreans and experts from afield.

The book contains historical accounts of the club, an interview with P. William Filby -- recurrent speaker at meetings of the club and the only person to serve twice non-consecutively as president, an interview with newspaperman and longtime member, James H. Bready, lists of members, meetings, and publications, the constitution of the club, and a list of the subscribers to the publication of the book.

The section "Children's Books in Bygone Baltimore," which occupies two-thirds of the book, demonstrates the collecting of children's books in Baltimore. An essay by Linda F. Lapides, "For Amusement and Instruction," is the first sustained account of books published for and read by children in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Baltimore. It is accompanied by a fully annotated narrative catalogue of 135 items in the distinguished collection of Baltimore children's books that Linda F. Lapides and her husband, Julian L. Lapides, have assembled. The essay includes a bibliographical record of the development of the collection, and the catalogue is provided with indexes of authors and associated persons, of titles, and of printers, publishers, and booksellers.

This book is a contribution both to the history of bibliophile organizations in the United States and to scholarship on early children's books in America.

The book contains 16 black-and-white photographs of children's books in the catalogue, 3 portrait photographs of principal members of the Baltimore Bibliophiles, Dorothy E. Miner, Elizabeth Baer, and P. William Filby, and -- as a color frontispiece -- the illustration of Baltimore's Washington Monument that appears on the cover of a copybook published ca. 1840 in Baltimore.

Linda F. Lapides, life-long resident of Baltimore, is a former librarian at the Enoch Pratt Free Library and longtime collector of children's books published in and associated with Baltimore. Donald Farren is a retired librarian and author of a new introduction to the Oak Knoll Press reprint of Geoffrey Ashall Glaister's Encyclopedia of the Book (1996, 2001). August A. Imholtz, Jr., was president of the Baltimore Bibliophiles, 2006-2008.
