The 1860s are considered the "Golden Age" of illustrated periodicals, a time when the "knockabout" humor of the 1840s, which was dominated by illustrators such as Cruikshank, Doyle, and Phiz, gave way to a more considered style grounded in serious artistic principles, allowing for deeper expression and emotion in artistic output. The first book of its kind, Illustrated Periodicals of the 1860s, focuses extensively on the illustrated magazine as a distinct form.

Illustrated Periodicals provides a new and informative approach to the study of "sixties" periodicals, revealing the previously unstudied area of the complex interrelationships between the various parties involved in the production of these magazines: publishers, editors, artists, engravers, and authors. The book considers the effects of these relationships on creative output, both artistic and literary, and in so doing provides a detailed, historical reconstruction of the essential character of the periodicals of that era. The book includes over 120 reproductions of engravings and preparatory drawings, almost all of them original size.

Additionally, the text contains two appendices; the first includes a reflection of the work that goes into collecting and researching these periodicals. Michael Broomfield, a corporate lawyer by profession, has become, over the past 40 years, a preeminent collector of first editions and other materials by a number of American writers, including Raymond Carver, E.E. Cummings, William Faulkner, Joseph Heller, Robinson Jeffers and many living authors. Collecting work in many forms, Broomfield displays remarkable attention to detail and an acute understanding of the complexities of editions. He has what is probably the most extensive private collection of John Updike materials. This bibliography is Broomfield's first book. He lives in New York City with his wife and their daughter.

First edition. Frank E. Schoonover (1877-1972) is recognized as one of the foremost illustrators of his time. His prolific contribution to American illustration spanned more than 40 years and included more than 2200 illustrations. His work appeared in most of the popular periodicals in the first half of the twentieth century, including Harpers, Scribner's, Saturday Evening Post, American Boy, Country Gentleman, and Colliers, as well as in over 150 books, particularly children's classics and contemporary fiction by such authors as Jack London, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Clarence Mulford, Lucy Foster Madison, James Willard Schultz, and Zane Grey. His iconic images of Hopalong Cassidy, Blackbeard, Jean LaFitte, Jim Bridger, Robinson Crusoe, Hans Brinker, Gulliver, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Joan of Arc remain a testimony of his creative, artistic ability.

Born in Oxford, New Jersey, in 1877, Schoonover eventually attended Drexel Institute in Philadelphia where he was taught by the quintessential American illustrator, Howard Pyle. Also, the young artist was chosen to attend Pyle's summer school in Chadds Ford. With Pyle's help, Schoonover initiated his illustrative career in 1899 with four en grisaille oil paintings for the book Jersey Boy in the Revolution. He numbered them #1-4 as he began recording his works in the remarkable day books, a chronological, detailed account that he maintained for his entire career. After settling in 1900 in Wilmington, Delaware, the artist traveled widely in the United States and Canada, giving him a unique perspective and a rich reservoir of experiences, which he incorporated into many works. He subsequently became recognized as an expert on the indigenous tribes of the Hudson Bay area. When the popularity of illustration waned in the 1940s, Schoonover turned to landscapes and commissions including designs for magnificent stained glass windows. He was also a sought-after, accomplished art teacher for twenty-five years.

The two-volume, slip-cased Frank E. Schoonover Catalogue Raisonné embodies Schoonover's entire oeuvre, from his earliest sketches to his last easel paintings. The book is chronologically organized with the numeration based on his daybook entries. Included are over 3000 images, many in full color, a detailed biography with accompanying time line, information about his models and students, lists of exhibitions and the magazines he illustrated, two additional bibliographies, and three indices. It is comprehensive in scope and will stand as the pre-eminent record of Schoonover, his life, and his work.

Cookbooks from this period are no longer only of interest to collectors and antiquarians. Food history is taught as an academic subject in an increasing number of universities, and this bibliography will be a useful tool for students of culinary literature, as a source for the history of cuisine and food culture. This book explores the materials and techniques used in their fabrication while illustrating their evolution from the eighteenth through the twentieth century. She holds an MS in art conservation and serves as Assistant Winterthur Professor in the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation. She also holds an MA in American Material Culture from the University of Delaware. Since 1991, she has pursued a long-standing research interest on the fabrication and preservation of American architectural drawings. In support of her research she has received several grants and has lectured, consulted, and published widely on issues related to architectural drawings.

Eléonore Kissel is a Paper Conservator and a Consultant in Preventative Conservation. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Arts and Science from Concordia University, Montreal, and a Master's Degree in Conservation from the Sorbonne Paris I University. Eléonore is an active member of the conservation community in France, teaching courses at the Sorbonne Paris I University and the Institut National du Patrimoine. She has published in Museum International (UNESCO), International Preservation News (IFLA), The Book and Paper Group, and Musées et collections publiques de France.

Erin Vigneau currently works as a Lecturer in Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as well as other universities in metropolitan St Louis. Mertz Library at The New York Botanical Garden, Princeton University Library and The Conservation Center for Art and Historical Artifacts. The purpose of this book is to guide the reader through the sequence of operations involved in creating a book bound in leather, or a "fine binding." The author defines a fine binding as a book fully covered in leather, with leather-jointed endpapers, gilt edges, and leather doublures. Although a basic knowledge of bookbinding terms and techniques is assumed, this book is meant for both novice and experienced bookmakers.

The book is intended to be used as an active guide during the process of fine binding. It is arranged into sixteen sections, listing the sequence of operations, beginning with preliminary work and ending with preparing and putting in leather doublures. Each section includes appropriately numbered instructions allowing the user to find his or her place in the sequence of operations with a reference for what step is next. There are also numbered explanatory sections that include a rationale (why you do it) and technique (how you do it). The work includes close to 300 black and white illustrations, four appendices, and a bibliography.

Jen Lindsay is a bookbinder with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and writing on bookbinding and the history of the book. She first studied bookbinding at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts, London (1977-1979), and then worked as a freelance bookbinder. She was a bookbinding tutor and Program Convener for the BA Bookbinding and BA Calligraphy programs at Roehampton Institute, West London (1983-2001) and then bookbinding tutor at The City Literary Institute, London (2001-2005).

Reprint of the 1922 first edition which was limited to 500 copies. Contains a number of full page plates. Still one of the most exhaustive studies of the printing press and literature of Colonial Maryland. There seems to have been no source that was not carefully investigated. Mr. Wroth has not only assembled all the information that could be obtained about his subject, but has presented it in a most attractive manner. This work will rank as one of the great contributions to the history of colonial American literature. It is also of interest to Virginians as William Nuthead, first printer of Maryland, was probably the same as the William Nulhead or Nuthead who was employed by Buckner when he established the short-lived press at Jamestown. In all 372 items are meticulously described. Includes an index.
